Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable & powerful I bought the 87R because I moved onto some new property and need to clear brush growing over and through the fences along the property line. I picked the R model because it is described has having extra torque for cutting thicker vegetation. This machine does not disappoint! It starts easily and the controls are very ergonomic--even though I am left-handed and this machine is built for a right-handed person I find it very comfortable to use. It has plenty of power. It easily cuts through yaupon, blackberry, brambles, and other misc brush up through 1/2" thick with the engine at partial throttle! I'm sure it has the power to cut thicker brush, I just haven't encountered it yet. When trimming along the fenceline I like the fact that I can concentrate on making sure I don't strike the fence, and otherwise just let the machine do its thing. I don't have to worry about bogging it down or taking too heavy of a cut--it just cuts whatever gets in front of it.The anti-vibe system on this machine is also fantastic. It feels very smooth to run with minimal vibration transferred back to the user. That was something I didn't really think about when I bought the unit but I noticed it right away when I first ran it.This trimmer is not cheap, but I learned years ago that professional quality power equipment is worth every penny. Instead of buying homeowner gear over and over again because it is impractical if not impossible to repair, buy pro gear ONCE and save a lot of money in the long run. Not to mention you can enjoy the increase in productivity at the same time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Stihl Is as strong as steel This is my first Stihl and also my first single sided hedge trimmer. The first thing I notice the handles a farther apart and when holding the unit it feel a lot lighter and it's a lot more maneuverable and since my hand is not in front of the engine like on the double sided blade unit I can see better. Another thing is on the fist job I had to trim this long hedge that was chest height when I was dome I noticed that I was feeling fatigue on my arms and not my arms and my back like I normally do.Performance wise Stihl spec says this thing is geared for TORQUE to cut overgrown hedges let me tell you I was cutting this over grown bougainvillea that I was taking like a foot in other places even more the branches were 1/2 inch tick and this thing cut it like it was nothing and I was holding the throttle about 20% this is a torque monster I have cut 1" tick overgrown hedges no problem with this thing 20% throttle or less is all I need.I you have to cut overgrown hedges this is the machine for you!
