Reducing Dust with Water

Reducing Dust with Water

While your STIHL Cutquik® cut-off machines can cut through demanding materials such as concrete slabs, blocks and pavers with powerful precision, they can also leave dust in their wake. In an effort to help control your crew’s exposure to dust, STIHL recommends that you always use water when operating your STIHL Cutquik®. When cutting concrete, water not only helps lubricate the cutting wheel, it also reduces the spread of dust.

STIHL Pressurized Water Tank

STIHL Pressurized Water Tank

Provides water flow for wet-cutting attachments when a pressurized water hose is not available.

STIHL Cutquik® Cart with Water Tank

STIHL Cutquik® Cart with Water Tank

No need to drag a water hose along behind a cart, now you can take the water with you.

Inhalation of respirable crystalline silica can cause serious or fatal respiratory disease. The instruction manuals for STIHL abrasive cutting solutions address the use of good working techniques, engineering controls and respiratory protection to reduce exposure to respirable crystalline silica. Full warnings and instructions related to dust suppression are found in the instruction manual for your STIHL product. A few points to keep in mind:

  • STIHL abrasive cutting solutions suitable for cutting concrete and other construction materials containing crystalline silica are designed with an integrated water system for dust suppression.
  • To reduce the risk of serious or permanent injury to the operator or any bystanders from exposure to potentially harmful dust, the water flow rate to the abrasive wheel should be at least 20 fl. oz. (0.6 liters) per minute anytime material containing silica is being cut.

If using the STIHL GS 461 Concrete Cutter, please read the following: To reduce the risk of serious or permanent injury from exposure to harmful dust, and to prevent irreparable damage to the cutting attachment, always connect the STIHL GS 461 concrete cutter to a water supply with a minimum water pressure of 22 PSI (1.5 bar) before starting work. The water is used to bind harmful dust, cool the diamond abrasive chain and rinse material from the bar groove and the rest of the cutting attachment. Confirm adequate water pressure before starting to cut.
  • When using a pressurized or gravity-fed water tank, water pressure will decrease as the water level in the tank decreases. STIHL recommends using the highest water flow setting on your cut-off machine whenever possible. Maintain tank pressure by refilling gravity-fed tanks and re-pressurizing pressurized tanks periodically.
  • If wet cutting at the recommended flow rate is not utilized or cannot be confirmed, the operator and bystanders should always wear a respirator approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for the material being cut and that has an assigned protection factor (APF) sufficient to provide the necessary level of protection for worksite-specific conditions.
  • Even if wet cutting at the recommended flow rate, an operator who is working with the tool for more than two hours in one day and any bystanders should always wear a respirator approved by NIOSH for the material being cut and with an APF sufficient to provide the level of respiratory protection needed for worksite-specific conditions.
  • An operator who is working with the battery-powered TSA 230 indoors or in an enclosed area, along with any bystanders, should always wear a NIOSH-approved respirator that is rated for the material being cut and appropriate for worksite-specific conditions.
  • Your employer is likely to have in place an OSHA-required respiratory protection program and can provide information regarding the type and level of respiratory protection needed for your worksite conditions.
  • Always read the warnings and instructions for your STIHL product before starting work. Follow all safety precautions – improper use can cause serious or fatal injury.
