Preparing for Proper Chainsaw Storage

After completing your jobs for the day, it’s time to store your chainsaw. Follow these simple steps to ensure your saw is ready for action whenever you need it again.

The Best Way to Store a Chainsaw

Keeping your chainsaw properly maintained helps you extend the life of your equipment. Before you put your chainsaw away, follow these steps to keep it in top shape.

Before You Clean

  • After using your chainsaw, let it cool down before touching.
  • Inspect your saw for any broken or missing parts.

Cleaning Your Chainsaw

  • Using your scrench to loosen the bolts, remove the bar and chain. This allows access to the parts of the saw that collect the most dirt and debris.
  • Use a spare toothbrush or rag to clean up any bar and chain oil or debris that has collected inside your saw.
  • Be sure to check that your oiler’s passageway and adjustment pin mechanism are completely free of debris.
  • While wearing protective gloves, wipe down the bar of your chainsaw with a cloth.
  • You can use a bar groove cleaner to remove any debris stuck in the rails of the bar.
  • Ensure the adjustment pin holes and oil holes are completely free of debris. If these holes become blocked, it will lead to your bar and chain receiving insufficient oil.
  • When you reassemble your chainsaw, you should flip over your bar to maximize wearability. You should reverse your bar after every cleaning and each time you sharpen your chain.
  • Check your air filter. If it’s dirty, clean it according to the instructions in your chainsaw’s manual, or replace it with a new filter if it’s neccessary.
  • Inspect your starter rope for any wear.
  • Put the bar and chain back on your chainsaw and store it in a safe place.
