Preparation

  • Assess your project area and clear it of any potential obstacles or material that could be thrown by the cutting blade (like gravel).
  • If the soil is dry, spray it with water to reduce dust.
  • Always wear proper protective gear designed and rated for your task, such as boots, gloves, eye protection, brush shield, and hearing protection.
  • Place the edger wheel on a hard surface adjacent to where you want to create your edge trench. Adjust the wheel so that it barely touches the ground.

Edging

  • Once adjusted, started, and in position, use the sight to align the edger. Give the unit throttle as you lower it into the soil.
  • Walk forward, guiding the edger as you go. Let the edger set the pace. For tough or overgrown areas, make multiple passes.
  • When finished, rake any large debris and clean up with a STIHL blower.
  • If approached while working, turn the unit off immediately.
