Starting a Gas-Powered Edger

  • Place the edger on flat ground, making sure the area is clear and free from all obstructions.
  • Depress the purge pump bulb a minimum of five times.
  • Move the choke control lever to the cold-start position, if so equipped (consult manual).
  • Using your left hand, firmly grip the unit just below the powerhead and press down. Never kneel or apply pressure to the shaft of the edger.
  • Use your right hand to grip and slowly pull starter handle until you feel slight resistance, then give a brisk, full pull.
  • Repeat until the engine starts. If the engine won’t start after five pulls, or it starts and stalls, move the choke to the warm-start position.
  • When the engine starts, depress the throttle trigger lock and squeeze the throttle. The choke will automatically switch to the run position.
  • Give the engine throttle to warm it up.
  • If someone approaches while you are working, turn the engine off immediately.
  • Any time you turn the engine off, make sure that you wait for the cutting blade to come to a complete stop.
