Prepare the Battery

Make sure your batteries are ready to go to work and provide top performance to your tools when you follow these storage instructions.

  • Make sure the battery is clean and dry, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Store out of reach of children.
  • Store away from direct sunlight in a secure, dry area at temperatures no lower than 14°F and no higher than 122°F.
  • For maximum battery life, store the battery at an ambient temperature between 50°F and 68°F, with a charge between 40% (two green LEDs) and 80% (three green LEDs).
  • Do not leave spare batteries unused. Use them in rotation.

For Integrated Battery Tools

Tools that feature an integrated battery require a different storage method.

  • Switch off the tool and remove the activation key.
  • Make sure the tool is clean and dry, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Store tool in a dry, secure place out of reach of children and other unauthorized users.
  • Store the activation key separately away from the tool and out of reach of children and other unauthorized users.
  • For maximum battery life, store the tool and integrated battery at an ambient temperature between 50°F and 68°F with a charge between 40% and 60% (two green LEDs). If the tool is stored above 86° F, its run time and performance may be reduced.
  • Before storing, always unplug the charger from the wall outlet and remove the charger from tool.

True or False?

Q: A STIHL battery should be fully charged before storage.

A: False.

Lithium-ion batteries feature modern technology with a low level of self-discharge when compared to rechargeable batteries of the past. Lithium-ion batteries are designed to protect cells from deep discharge. Thanks to separate integrated fuses, the battery will automatically switch to an idle state. It's best to store a STIHL battery with a 40% to 80% charge (two or three lit LED lights) remaining for maximum life of the battery.
