Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy work on tree widths up to 1.5x the length of the bar so far. I've brought down and cut up a total of 12 full grown trees with this saw now, about a 50-50 mix of Fir and Maple around our farm. I've also put to use on dozens of downed tree branches and cut down several stumps with no issues. Keep the chain sharp and oiled up and this thing cuts so well it's like having magical powers. If I ever upgrade it will just be to have a longer bar for some of the bigger trees on the ground out on our property. Local dealership is awesome.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My First & Last Stihl Chain Saw I had very high hopes for my first Stihl MS171 chainsaw.I was very disappointed that it only lasted 4 years.I am a homeowner. I do not perform any commercial work. The Stihl dealership said that the governor on the Stihl was defective and it destroyed the chain saw. The dealership said it would cost about 65% of what a new chainsaw would cost, so instead, I purchased a competitors chainsaw.Very disappointing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little chainsaw I own a Lawn and Garden outfit. The 171 is the smallest saw in my arsenal and it is easily the most used. It is great for cutting limbs and even felling small trees. It is lightweight and versatile enough to scale a ladder or climb without being a pain. I recommend it to clients all the time as a great "homeowner" saw. It is a great option for a property that doesn't need the diameter capabilities of a Farm Boss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Getting a lot of saw for the price This saw will limb trees and fell big trees too. Let the saw do the work. Takes a bit of patience with the picco chain but it's safe and will get the job done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth It I have had my saw for about two weeks now, my only complaint, was it was a little hard to start at first. It took a while to get fired up, but once it did, I cut a lot of limbs and branches. It made me happy. However, they do tend to flood easy if not stable. It does a workout to get it going at times though. But, for home use, I would get another one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice saw but does not cut hard wood well Bought this saw to clean up brush around the house and starts well seems to be of good quality but it will hardly cut really hard wood, this is with a brand new chain and I even took it back to where i bought it to verify everything was put together properly. Not sure if this is due to the anti kick chain or if its just a bad saw either way not happy w
