Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fine when it starts This is the worst Stihl product I own. I love my problem free 026 saw, H45 hedge trimmer, and FS 56 weed trimmer. They start & run easily. This is OK when & if it starts. But I shouldn't have to fight a new saw to start. The guys at Ace laughed when I said that, because they'd heard it before.I've followed all of the instructions in the manual and am not new to chainsaws. This is a waste of money!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought it and the carburetor is not working Can't use it, it will start but it won't stay running. Now I have to drive an hour and a half there to drop it off to be fixed, then go back home and do it all over again when I pick it up. Complete garbage, I was told these are the best in the business- what a joke

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for light use I was very unsure which chainsaw I wanted to purchase so when I went in to the store to purchase one I was just browsing at first. I was then asked by a sales clerk if I needed some help. I told him I do and I have narrowed my search down to two models and was wondering if I was in the right area. He said I was and he asked how much time will I be using the chainsaw for. I told him it is for home use only, if you will. I get cut up logs from friends and family who know I have a fire pit in my backyard in the city but they are too big to cut up by hand so I thought a chainsaw would be more appropriate. I also told him when I go camping that I will bring it too just to cut wood for a campfire. He recommended the MS171 as it will benefit my needs. I also asked if there was anything else he would recommend and he suggested that I get the premixed fuel and the bar oil. I said thank you very much. I took my chainsaw home and went into cutting up the wood even though it is hotter than Hades outside but at least I will be prepared for winter time and also I can put the wood on my log rack. I proceeded to cut up the mesquite that everyone has brought to me and well lets say it got the job done but dulled that chain right up. The chainsaw did exactly as it was supposed to but I don't think it was made for the hardwood Mesquite? Again the chainsaw performed well and It did not take me hours to complete my task, although I will either have to sharpen my chain or probably get the right type of stain for what I cut up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powered through 5 tons of ASH I recently had an ash tree fall over in my yard, and this product was recommended for purchase from a friend. My friend has been a long time STIHL fan, and told me it was a little workhorse for a good price. With the 16" bar it did take a few extra cuts to get through the larger section of trunk, but it didn't quit on me. It chewed through the smaller sections with no issue, and after three days I am able to supply a couple of cords of firewood as gift to my friends with wood burning stoves in their houses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made my day! I was worried about getting it started the first time, but it fired up on the 3rd pull. I used it to cut an oak tree that had fallen on my fence. Cut through the limbs like butter. The trunk was also cut and the saw had plenty of power even though the tree was about 20" in diameter. Just took my time and worked from both sides. This is my first Stihl saw and I will probably never buy a different type ever again.,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Effective and reliable This saw is impressive considering it's size and cost. I just wish it had a primer bulb to aid in starting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good saw First start is a little difficult but once you get it started the first time it will start and run great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall it appears to be a very good little saw. I purchased this saw specifically for trimming the back of my property line which consisted of many sapling and mid sized trees up to about 5" in diameter. In the first day I used the saw constantly for 5 hours, and it did an admirable job although I do feel it's a little underpowered compared to the arborist/climbing saw my neighbor has, despite this having the smaller chain. Throughout it's use it has been easy to start although at times it seems the idle is just a tad bit lower than I'd like and it stalled when idling. An easy fix I believe. There were several times I wished it had just a bit more power, but I wouldn't say it was enough to make me want to spend an additional $200-$300 more for the arborist saw. The other thing I did notice is that it seemed I was going through tanks of gas rather quickly, but of course I was using the saw constantly for hours and you tend to lose track of how long a tank lasted. Even with these issues in mind, overall I'm very happy with the purchase and feel it offers great value for the money. My Stihl dealer was very thorough with me in going over the start procedure which seems to be a little misunderstood judging by the reviews here, and stressed I should use only non-ethanol fuel which in my area is easy to get. I feel the overwhelming majority of negative responses today on small power equipment are because of ethanol in the fuel. I'd rate the saw a solid 4.5/5. Add a touch more power and a little bigger gas tank and it'd be perfect for me.
