Katelyn Johnson

Northern California big-timber faller and certified arborist Katelyn Johnson teams up with STIHL to take on big trees on the West Coast.

While Katelyn Johnson is most often associated with the big-timber felling that she shares on social media (@tree_being), she is also an experienced tree climber and certified arborist with nine years in the tree industry. She often finds herself deep in the mountains felling trees either for logging operations, wildfire hazard mitigation, or wildfire cleanup projects.

Born and raised in a small town in western Ohio, Katelyn spent her childhood playing outside and raising animals on her grandparents' farm. Her background was later manifested in her degree—a bachelor of science in forestry and wildlife management from Ohio State University. Katelyn developed a deep love for trees while in school. After graduation, instead of pursuing a forester position, Katelyn was intrigued by an ad from a local arborist company. The labor-intensive job would focus on individual tree care instead of forests. Although she had no idea what to expect or if she could pull off such a physical position, Katelyn joined the crew and began climbing that summer. She was hooked.

After continuing residential tree work for several years in Columbus, Ohio, Katelyn made a leap to California to pursue her dream of felling big trees out west. Within three years, she started her own company, Sure Shot Forestry LLC, dedicated to her aunt, Annie Oakley.

Katelyn looks forward to growing her business, focusing on training, and continuing to share her adventures in the industry on her social media platforms.
