Overview: cleaning your hedge trimmer

  • It is recommended to secure your hedge trimmer for a basic clean after each use
  • It is best to deep clean the tool before extended storage
  • Essential: personal protective equipment as specified in the operating instructions
  • For petrol hedge trimmers, you must also clean the air filter, fuel tank and intake opening
  • Be aware of the effects of petrol-driven and battery tools being out of use for a long time

Why you should clean your hedge trimmer

When trimming hedges and shrubs, plant sap, resin and dirt accumulate on the blades of your hedge trimmer. Failure to remove such residue from the blades will affect the tool’s cutting performance.

Twigs and leaves stuck in the cutting attachments can also affect the function of the machine. Putting your hedge trimmer away without cleaning it risks the formation of rust. Regular cleaning of the hedge trimmer therefore protects your device from premature wear and maintains its performance.

Basic cleaning after use

After each use, invest a few minutes in the care of your hedge trimmer, paying particular attention to the cutting attachment. This is the part which is most exposed to external influences. The following steps should be noted for basic cleaning:

Deep cleaning before extended storage

From time to time your hedge trimmer needs a deep clean. It is advisable to do this before storing the device for several months or if it is no longer functioning optimally.

To do so, proceed as follows:

Cleaning your hedge trimmer: special considerations for petrol and battery hedge trimmers

In addition to the above-mentioned cleaning steps, you should note these special considerations for petrol and battery devices which will be out of use for an extended period (3 months or longer):

Petrol

Empty the tank: after the last use, the fuel tank of the hedge trimmer should be emptied in a well-ventilated place and the removed fuel disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

Run the carburettor empty: start the machine and let it run for a short time.
Check the air filter, cool air intake and/or spark plugs.
Clean the cool air intake opening if needed. In the event of insufficient engine power, replace the spark plug and clean the air filter.

Battery

Remove the battery and fit the slot cover.

Cleaning: clean the battery with a damp cloth.
How to charge correctly: the lithium-ion battery can be charged at any time, regardless of the charge level. However, avoid fully discharging the battery, as this can seriously damage the charging capacity.
Storing a battery: charge the battery to between 40 and 60 percent (2 green LEDs lit) before storage and store it separately from the charger.

You can find detailed information about this in the user manual for your tool.

Cleaning hedge trimmers with household products

Simple home remedies are often enough to remove rust from your hedge trimmer. A homemade paste of baking soda and water, diluted vinegar or citric acid can help to remove traces of rust.

When it comes to the quality of oil however, it is not advisable to cut corners: you should only use special hedge trimmer oil, or alternatively chainsaw oil. Otherwise there is a considerable risk of damaging the rubber seals.
