STIHL Inc., creator and producer of the world’s premier lumberjack competition, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by Ram Trucks, announced today the 2013 U.S. Championship lineup. The 20 best U.S. professional lumberjack athletes will compete in the “Original Extreme Sport” at The Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., June 7-9 where only one man will claim the coveted national championship title and take home a new Ram Truck.

Tickets to the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS U.S. Championship are now on sale and can be purchased at www.lumberjackfeud.com. The full event schedule is included below.

“The 2013 season of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series  has revealed an outstanding amount of talent with our championship roster to include returning champions, seasoned favorites, former collegiate competitors and first-time advancers,” said Brad Sorgen, producer of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series. “We look forward to bringing back our top-notch competition, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS U.S. Championships, to the Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud for a great show and competition.”

Among the top 20 to compete in the U.S. Championship is defending U.S. Champion Arden Cogar Jr., who has competed in the Series for more than two decades and holds five STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Championship titles. Former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series U.S. champions that will return to try and repeat history also include Carson Bosworth (2008), Mel Lentz (2010) and Arden Cogar Jr. (2009, 2011 and 2012).

Also making the cut are father-son competitors Mike and Matt Slingerland from Rockwell, NC; Paul and Matt Cogar from Diana, W.Va. and Mel and Jason Lentz also from Diana, W.Va.

The 2013 qualifying rounds provided some surprises with newcomer Walt Page from Tollhouse, Calif. taking the top spot in the Western Qualifier during his first season in the Professional Series. Page competed in the Collegiate Series in 2011, placing second overall in the 2011 Collegiate Championship. Jason Lentz from Diana, W. Va., Calvin Willard from Barnet, Vt. and Paul Pfenninger from Scottsville, NY will make their first championship appearance in the 2013 U.S. Championships.

In the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS U.S. Championships, the 20 athletes will compete in six lumberjack disciplines including the hot saw, springboard chop, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop, racing the clock and each other. They will start in two pools of 10 with the top five in each pool advancing to the final U.S. Championship round Saturday, June 8. The winner not only claims the coveted national title but will advance to the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany Oct. 25-26.

Sunday’s competition will feature the Collegiate Championships, where the nation’s top six collegiate lumberjacks (see roster below) compete in four professional disciplines, the standing block chop, single buck, stock saw and underhand chop, with the winner receiving an automatic spot in the 2014 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional Series and a spot on the international rookie team that will compete at the World Championship in Stuttgart this October.
