STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® 2015 Professional Series Applicants
Welcome to the 30th season of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series! This past year was a success again as the premier event in professional lumberjack sports and we have no intention of slowing down as 2015 is already shaping up to be another great year.
The 2015 season will see some changes to the competition format. In an effort to balance the pools, we will be hosting either four or five regional qualifiers. Depending on the number of athletes that apply and fit into a specific region, we are remaining flexible on the final number of venues (four or five) in order to allow for an equal distribution of talent across the USA and reduce travel costs/time for the athletes. If we have four regions, there will be 10 athletes per region. If we have five regions, there will be eight athletes per region. This will equal out to a total of 40 athletes, as in recent years. The Championship event will host 20 total athletes. So, depending on the four vs. five regional approach, either four or five athletes will move on to the finals. No matter what, it's a 50% chance to advance from the regionals.
The Championship will consist of 20 athletes separated into two pools of 10. Four athletes will move on into the Final Round for a Final pool of eight. The U.S. Championship event is currently scheduled for a one-day competition on June 20th in Central Park, New York City. All venue and qualifier information is below.
Because of the one-day event, the relays have been eliminated from this year's competitions and the prize money has been put back into the general pool. Also, we have increased the total prize money pool for this year by $30,000. Additionally, we are adding prizes for all of the top three athletes to include a Ram Truck (1st place), a John Deere Gator (2nd place) and a $5,000 STIHL/Sponsor Prize Pack (3rd place). The top U.S. chop/saw competitor and a relay team will advance to the World Championship competition in Europe.
The collegiate events will still have all five regions and will take place as part of the regular Conclave schedule in March and April. The top collegiate athlete from each region will be invited to the National Championship in June. We will also select three wild card athletes for a championship of eight collegiate athletes.
We are also excited to announce that the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series Professional events will continue to be broadcast on the ABC Network in 2015. This move to a larger and more visible network promises to display your skill in this unique sport to a much larger audience of fans across the country. The collegiate events will continue to be broadcast on the ESPNU Network.
As always, we want to ensure we produce a competition that is exciting to fans and fair to you, the competitors. Thanks to the efforts of Granite State Lumberjack Shows, JM Associates and our PR firm, IMRE, we believe this format will invigorate the competition and will deliver a fair and exciting event that will continue to recognize the best athletes in the sport, while providing up-and-coming athletes a chance to break in to the Series.
As we have for the past 29 years, selection of STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series competitors will be coordinated between the Granite State Lumberjack Show staff and our competitor advisory group. As the U.S. STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series events will determine the overall U.S. National Champion, only U.S. athletes will be selected to participate in this year’s competitions. Applicants will be ranked as we have in the past, and then divided up per region based on ranking and home location. This will be done in order to balance the competitor talent in each region, while attempting to minimize travel for all competitors involved.
Please see below for more details, as well as the application to participate in the 2015 competition. As always, to the greatest extent possible, we have scheduled this year’s event to avoid conflicts with other competitions.
