How did you get involved in lumberjack sports?
My first cousins, Arden Sr. and Jack Cogar got me started. Arden and Jack started the first chopping contests in Webster County then organized the Webster County Wood Chopping Festival when I was a boy. My brothers, Bill and Guy Cogar started chopping and sawing so I started doing it to have something to do on the weekends during the summer.
When did you begin participating/competing in lumberjack sports and the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series?
I started competing in lumberjack sports in 1974 and I started competing in the Series in 1997. I didn’t compete again until 2010.
How do you train for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series and other lumberjack competitions?
I chop a log with Matthew every now and then, but otherwise I just split a lot of firewood and work in the woods.
Are you related to any current or former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series competitors?
My son Matthew, Arden Cogar Sr., and Arden Cogar Jr. are current and former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series competitors.
Best/strongest STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series discipline:
My strongest discipline would be the standing block and the hot saw.
Any advice for the collegiate competitors?
If you are going to chop you need to commit to it wholeheartedly. Keep working at it to refine your skill.
What pro athlete/celebrity would you like to see try one of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series disciplines?
I'd like to see any NASCAR driver run a hot saw. It's one thing to have it all around you; but it's completely another to have it in your hands.
Name three songs on your training/working out playlist?
I don’t listen to music while I train. The only sounds I hear are the ones in nature and my axe or saw in the wood.
Proudest moment in your life so far:
I have a lot of those. Family is important and watching my children grow up and achieve their goals is a great feeling. One of my proudest moments would have to be watching Matt chop and saw his way to four championships and going on to compete for the World title.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Chopping has been a part of my life for a long time and will be for a long time to come.
