Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy!! I never got a chance to try out this gas hedge trimmer because I could not get it started. I was using the high octane fuel made by Stihl.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy start, once one knows the trick. My Stihl maintenance pro set me straight. Do NOT use the primer bulb. Close choke plate, full throttle, pull couple of times, open plate, still full throttle, starts on 2 or 3rd pull. If flooded(like I did with flippin' bulb!) Open choke, full throttle, pull 10or 11 times. Mine started on 10th pull. Starts NOW on 1 or 2nd pull every time. Good call KELLY what a pro! After 2 hours, disassemble cutting head, much easier to clean. Life got much easier. Thank-you Steve , Steve and Kelly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Difficult to Start I purchased this unit a couple of years ago to replace-a much heavier one that I had for several years. This thing is hard to start at best or wil not start at all. I have had it in the shop, but the problem continues.. At times I am so exasperated trying to start it that I don.t feel like doing the trimming when it does start. I own a number of Stihl power tools and accessories and none of them are hard to start. I know Stihl must be aware of the starting issue. It is beyond me why they have not remedied the situation after all this time. Having said that, once it does start, it performs pretty well. But I would not recommend this trimmer, period.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase This hedge trimmer cuts through my massive hedges like butter. It has a larger engine displacement than the comparible Echo hedge trimmer and is the same price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will not stay running if on an angle This is one of the hardest starting pieces of equipment I have ever owned. If stored vertically it will not start. It has to lay flat for several minutes first. Then when using on sculptured round bushes, when it is held vertically to cut the sides when in tight spaces, the engine sputters and dies. If it lies flat for several minutes it will start and then the cycle starts over again. The Stihl shop cannot find anything wrong with it but they ran two tanks with it in a horizontal position. They told me their experience is these will not run unless held flat. Their personal ones sputter and die if run in a vertical (upside down) position, which is needed in tight spaces. It is very frustrating considering the cost of the unit. Also the repair department told me to use 93 Octane fuel which has not made a difference, even with Ethanol free fuel. There has to be a carb problem with this trimmer. My Stihl edger is very reliable but I wish I had another brand of hedge trimmer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Expected More from a "Stihl" This was a gift for Father's Day last year. I noticed when I first started it that it was a having a difficult time accelerating to top speed. Once it ran for several minutes it was fine, but would not idle properly and sometimes died becoming difficult to almost impossible to start. This spring I tried to start it back up using fresh gas/oil mix (premixed with no ethanol). would not keep running, and then when I did get it to run it was sporatic in the way it ran and would not maintain rpm's. Checked the pulg, regapped it. Removed the carberator and cleaned it. reassembled and tried to start and it ran for 15 seconds and died and am unable to get it started. I have a homelite trimmer, homelite chain saw, a husqavarna chain saw, weed eater edger, honda pressure washer, honda powered log splitter, snapper push mower, snapper riding mower, cub cadet zero turn that ALL start up on the first or second try and run perfect EVERY time. I have friends who are continually taking their "Stihl" to the shop because they can't get it started, or for "maintenance". Gimme a break. I'm going to get this running, and hope it runs long enough to sell on craigslist. Save yourself some frustration and stay away from this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent hedge trimmer Received the Stihl HL 45 for Father's Day about eight years ago. Couldn't ask for a better hedge trimmer. Easy to start and cuts hedge branches (up to 1/2") with ease and comfort. I personally maintain three homes (2.5 acres, 5.37 acres, and 1/2 acre) with this unit. All homes have intensive hedges and as long as you maintain this trimmer it will last a lifetime. Have only had to replace carburetor one time in all the years of owning. Key components to keep it working correctly is to maintain per Stihl's recommendations.
