Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't do without it Having to pull a recoil start on a 15' ladder after a 2 cycle machine has cut off sucks. Smelling like engine exhaust after using a machine all day sucks. Slowly going deaf and annoying every neighbor on the block with a loud engine while on a job site sucks. I couldn't imagine going back to using a 2 cycle hedge trimmer again. This unit makes it on the truck everyday and has tackled some enormously overgrown plant material as well as manicured hedges. Its seen a ton of use and abuse and it keeps on going. Job well done Stihl.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Expected Better. Inadequate cutting power. Purchased the HLA85, AP300 battery and AL300 charger hoping to eliminate ladder work. I use multiple Stihl products, chain saws, pole saw, hedge trimmers, lawn trimmer in my work and have found them to perform very well. The prospect of trimming hedges from ground level with lower noise and no exhaust fumes was very enticing. Unfortunately I have found the HLA85 unable to perform at the same level as the gas powered units and have stopped using it for any except lighter work. The blades move slowly and bind up and stop on branches of a size that the gas powered units will work their way through. This means having to stop work, get a ladder and use the more powerful gas powered unit to finish the cut. This resulted in the HLA85 being set aside and little used (I used it 3 times). I tried it again unsuccessfully and gave up on it. I reported the issue to my dealer and asked if it would be possible to return the HLA85 and get some credit or price consideration towards another machine, but was declined as I had it for over one year. That was disappointing from the point of view that the issue was not a malfunction but that the machine was unworthy. (also, the battery needs to be punched into place forcefully or it can fall out while being operated, as mine did)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long Reach, Quiet & Clean, Ready for Hours of Hedge Trimming w AP300 Battery Have over 57 years of landscape maintenance as private property owner with extensive hedging that ranges from normal heights and widths to 100s of lineal feet of hedging that reaches 30' height and up to 20' width. I have utilized Stihl products for decades and now as a so called 'senior citizen' I for the first time stepped away from the heavier and greatly powerful Stihl gas powered extended hedge trimmer and extended pole saw and have since July 2017 been using the HLA 85 with AP300 Battery and a HTA85 extended pole saw..The reach is excellent, reduced weight (vs gas unit) is very positive and the fact that all you must do is install the battery (unfortunately on my HLA85 the AP300 battery must be forcefully "punched into place" rather than simply snapped into place! to prevent subsequent unit malfunction...noted by 4 flashing red lights on the battery) and hit the switch and you are trimming without the loud noise and unhealthy exhaust of a gas engine. I am truely positively surprised about moving to this battery powered unit vs gas. The AP300 battery will provide at least two straight hours of hard work before needing a recharge. I purchased 2 batteries so that one could charge while using the other...but two charged batteries would keep most busy all day as rarely would anyone be operating the unit constantly which is another sound between cuttings vs gas powered which run constantly. Also VERY happy to be able to leave the hearing protection hanging in the garage... especially on hot humid days! After having powerful gas powered Stihls for decades, this comparatively lacks power (no surprise) and will stop/bind on occassion due to inability to quickly/cleanly cut through some hedging such as seagrapes.but not a significant problem... for most hedging it will trim as good as the gas unit. While advertising shows the unit with some sort of 'foot' to hold it level when set down on ground or workbench, that 'foot' does NOT come with the unit and has not been my unit ofen tips over on its side when I set it down. I made foam pads to help prevent scratching each time i must set it down.. I have same negative issue with my HTA85. Shame Stihl did not figure a stabilizing 'foot' design withing the housing as done on all gas units which keep the stabil/uprighy when set down.9 months of periodic use and while it is not perfect, I suspect it is about as good as available in a battery powered unit until further design improvements are made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good reach for large hedges. This trimmer can reach out a good distance. While I still have to use a ladder I can reach all the way across from my property. Low battery consumption, seems to last a good while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best hedge trimmer I came across. In an effort to get my hedges under control, I went through about 6 or 7 hedge trimmers looking for one that would take care of the job. I used various expensive gas hedge trimmers, while these were powerful, they couldn't extend far enough. Then I switched to various electric hedge trimmers, while these extended further than the gas hedge trimmers, they had no where near the cutting power, so I was forced to leave somethings behind because the trimmer couldn't take care of it.But the HLA 85, wow. It's a little on the heavy side, but I think that's just because I'm super out of shape. This thing not only extends out to get me almost 9 feet of length (with how I can hold it), but it is also super powerful, it cuts through those branches that even the gas trimmers has a hard time with. It's a little on the spendy side considering you have to buy the battery and charger separately, but it is well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suprisingly great I had the chance to use this unit along with the pole pruner and two of the 300 batteries. The hedge trimmer had great power and the telescoping pole was extremely useful. I did hedges all day on just one and half batteries which is inconceivable. When doing hedges I tend to take small breaks throughout the day, so it's great having that quick start/stop capability and even better to toss the ear protection on hot days. I have been through multiple 100 series stihl hedge trimmers and I still love them, but I will say I accomplished more with this unit. I'm a hard critic so here are my two dislikes: 1- the head should have more inbetween articulate settings as I needed them multiple times and 2 - the head is heavy compared to the battery side, which is extremely fatiguing to your forearm/bicep closest to the trimmer head.Overall great piece of equipment to have if you do a lot of big hedges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than enough power to get the job done Went with the AP300 battery just to make sure I had plenty of power. Still shows a 3/4 charge with about 2 hours of use. Wondering if I should have gone with the smaller battery for the weight savings. This thing does have some weight to it so you get a good upper body workout when using it. By looking at it and using it, it becomes obvious that this is a well made and serious tool. So great to be able to do tree shrub trimming without getting on a ladder. Took me about 45 minutes to do what used to take me half of a day. I would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Engineered I like all of its features. Cutting a 9 to 12 ft high hedge 40 ft long was simplified. Battery life 4 hours on AP300, completed the job without needing recharge. Some constructive criticism from a fellow mechanical engineer on future engineering updates: - Shears could be 2 inches longer, usually high hedges tend to be wider as well. Mine is 8 ft wide. It defies the purpose of buying a long cutter when you still need to use the ladder to cut the mohak in the middle of hedge after both sides are done.- Extension shaft rotates side to side when cutting head is locked at 90' angle. Maybe key or slot the shaft for better tool stability.- Shaft locking bolt thread is too agressive. Lower the thread pitch for more precise locking control. As it is leads to: too loose or overtighting.- Bottom surface of tool at battery enclosure could be rubberized/ doubleshot molding to prevent cracking when resting on the ground. I had to rest bottom on the ground every cutter head adjustment.
