Rated 1 out of 5 by from worked great for a week after purchase, been back with the dealer ever since... This trimmer worked great the first week I used it. That was five weeks ago. Right after purchase, I fully charged it up and was so excited I trimmed a few hedges that really didn't need trimming just to try it out. It worked great. I purchased the HLA 65 trimmer, the 300 battery, and the 500 charger based on the reviews I read, along with the significantly overpriced can of glorified WD40 Stihl blade spray based on recommendations of the dealer. Then I set it aside for a few weeks with a lubricated blade and slightly used charge (as the owners manual recommends) and went to use it. It didn't work. It was "locked up". I removed the battery and reinstalled it several times as I thought it needed a "reset" (no reset button). Finally, after several tries it slowly began to work. The battery was fully charged. This happened again last week, I had to go through the same process to get it to work. I have no intention of going and starting it up every few days to keep it working when not hedge trimming. I called the Stihl tech who referred me back to the dealer. It has been at the dealer ever since trying to duplicate the problem. The dealer is doing everything he can but tells me Stihl will only send "parts" once he determines what the problem is--not a replacement trimmer. I have a lemon. I hate to think of how many competitive trimmers I could have purchased for what this lemon cost me. Very disappointed...…..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recommend this machine highly I bought this HLA 65 after a year of reading reviews on many battery products.I took into consideration price as well as the companies. My main questions were: what model style battery hedge trimmer, power/speed, longevity of the battery, and charge rateI. I went with Stihl because I have had there gas powered products for 30 years and reviews were favorable. Stihl was more expensive than other companies but I felt Stihl has been making these tools for years in Gas power and I have had great results. I went to two stores that repair & sell Stihl and asked the sales as well as repair persons about the HLA 65. All spoke highly of the machineI with no issues. I was debating between the HSA 66 trimmer and the HLA 65. I was use to a 24" long bar gas hedge trimmer and did not know if the extended reach would work as well. They said that they were selling more extended reach for various reasons. Safety, that the cutting edge is farther away and convenience. I was questioning the weight and balance of the machine. I read several reviews discussing balance and harnesses. I already had a Stihl double standard harness on my brush cutter and thought I would try it. The HLA 65 does come with a single shoulder harness. I am 70 years old and maintain a half acre in Southern California. My back is not as young as 20 years ago. Dual shoulder harness style works well for me. I decided on the AL 500 fast charger due to its speed of charge. I thought a fast charger would allow me to only need 1 battery. I went with the AP300 battery. I read about the D loop handle being adjustable along the shaft for balance. which takes the Allen wrench supplied. The machine does come with the hook on the shaft for the harness attachment and this can be adjusted as well. My concern was will the harness be to constricting. Brush cutting is more of a swaying movement and down. Where as hedge trimming is all over the place on my property, down, under, top, sides and between. Bought the HLA 65 with AL 500 charger and a AP 300 battery. Charged for 30 minutes till a full charge. Did 250 feet of multiple type hedges sides and top and used 1/4 of the battery 1.5 hours. IMPRESSED and the noise level was nothing in comparison to my gas powered machine and no back issues. Start and Stop is so easy with this battery machine. The HLA 65 cutting speed was fine the blade sharpness was very good. Cutting of limb diameters was exceptional with 1/2" and some 5/8" branches. The harness worked well taking the weight off my back and I could do the top of the hedges at 6' 4" without a ladder. I am 5' 8" and weigh 170 pounds. The tilting head at first was a little stiff but after 6 to 10 times it started to tilt and lock into place much easier as well as faster. Adjustments to the head tilt are made easily while still hooked into the harness. Value of a machine can only be based on longevity to use & repair costs. I use my machines frequently during the year and keep my machines for many years. I hope that in 5 years I could add a follow up about Still battery machines. I like the fact that the battery can stay in the charger for next use, smart charger. I will purchase the battery long adjustable shaft extension pole trimmer for the trees with no hesitation. The AP 300 battery can be used as well on this machine. I recommend this machine highly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Hedge Trimmer Product is very good, but it is a bit heavy for the home user. I wish a harness was included that would go over both shoulders and reduce the strain on the arms and back. I am 65 and exercise daily, so I can imagine this could be a problem for women or sedentary men.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maiden Voyage Just put to use my new HLA 65 hedge trimmer. Obviously too early to really evaluate dependability. However, I trimmed 10, 8 ft tall pittosporum hedge, which took me about an hour to trim all sides and tops. Filled a large 75 gallon can. The super sharp blades cut fairly thick branches 3/4" to 1" without any problem. I was able to control the trimmer to make perfectly even cuts. The trimmer is well balanced and seems light. I'm going to move the middle handle around to get it into a preferred position. A torx wrench is included with the machine to loosen the handle. The articulated head was easy to move with a pull down on the unlocking handle and grabbing the black plastic handle on the cutting head to change the head angle. I bought the AL 100 battery and the hours worth of trimming used 1/4 of the battery charge, for me, homeowner, that should be plenty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice hedge trimmer This is my sixth Stihl implement, and it's a beauty. Quality piece of machinery, works perfectly like you'd expect it to. Now, i picked this trimmer because the specs indicated it weighs 9.4 lbs with the AP100 battery, a full 2 lbs. lighter than with the AP300. i bought the AP100 because I only need 30-40 minutes of run time (worst case), and the lighter total weight appealed to me, but therein lies the only negative. It's not a huge issue, but it's worth mentioning. With the AP100, most of the weight seems like it's on the motor/blade end, so the trimmer's a bit unwieldy. I have not used the included shoulder strap yet, so I'll give that a try next time. My advice though, is to buy the AP300 battery for it whether you need the additional run time or not. The balance will be much better. I was looking forward to trying it with both batteries in the store, but this trimmer had to be special ordered so I bought it sight unseen and bought the AP100 based on specs alone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As advertised Very pleased. Used heavily first day and surprised how long the battery lasted. Fairly well balanced but shoulder harness is a must.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tool Great cordless hedge trimmer, I use the hla65 commercially of which i have bought 4 over 3 years and my only problem has been that the motor is only held in by plastic cover and with constant use the can pop the motor out , which locks up gearing. Great tool!
