Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent dependable Saw with one flaw I love this saw. Bought it with a 6 pack of Stihl 2-stroke oil which has fuel stabillizer in it, I only really cut in the fall so this saw sat in a plastic case in the garage for about 9 months and when i went to use it this fall it fired right up. Very pleased with the dependability, build quality, and performance...and heck, it even looks good enough to put up on the mantel next to a beloved rifle. very good for the homeowner doing regular property maintenance. I have one complaint. The tool-less chain adjuster does work well but the mechanism can get a bit clogged with wood chips so i find myself blowing it out w compressed air to get things moving. if your ok with that then you will love this saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly a blessing! The Stihl 291. I have owned Echo chainsaws as a homeowner. I have always wanted a Stihl but never could find one in my price range until last year, I broke down and paid what is well worth the cost. The machine cuts consistently, unwavering, with power, and tension consistent and I have yet to tighten a fairly used chain. The saw is perfect for serious work around a wooded lot and I save so much money doing my own felling and chopping. Would not look elsewhere. The Stihl is the one and only purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great chainsaw After years of other brand chainsaws, including other leading brands, I made the plunge to Stihl. I was stubborn about the Stihl hype, but after years of chainsaw ills, like not starting when the most needed, I purchased a Stihl. I have only had it a week so I can only hope it starts when needed most. After bringing it home from the dealer I familiarized myself with the saw an MS291. Comparing to my old saw side by side the Stihl is hands down better constructed, no cheesy self tapping screws holding things together, which I'm sure will help this saw stay in one piece. I like the fact there is no priming bulb to push or to wear out like others I have had in the past. Starting is straight forward when cold open throttle, push chock lever down, pull three times engine sputters, move lever up one notch two pulls engine running, sweet. My dealer experience was not good, makes me wonder why a servicing dealer has to sell you the saw. The dealer was not concerned about my experience, he took the saw in a back room fueled and added bar oil. I was able to see him from where I was at the counter, he started it revved it a couple times turned it off and brought it back to the counter. No instructions were given I paid my bill and took it home. At home when I started it, it would not idle, no problem I adjusted it and idles great now, but what is the purpose of the dealer, free gas and oil I assume, not much can be said for servicing the new saw.Cutting with the saw is as expected plenty of power for what it is and cuts with no issues. I only have one concern, that is, the bar oiler, it seems to run on the dry side, revving the saw and watching for oil splatter as instructed in operating manual leaves almost no trace of bar oil. But after cutting and cleaning the saw there was oil under the chain housing and on the sprocket. Time will tell if there is enough oiling happening to lube the bar all the way to the tip.The other feature that shows attention to detail is the easy to adjust side chain tension screw, big plus. So far I'm happy with the purchase, my big complaint is why doesn't Stihl give you a case with the saw, I purchased one with the saw and it could not cost them more than a few dollars. And why the short warranty, I hope that's not an indication of things to come.I have since starting this review had a big day of cutting. This saw ate it up. The two trees had been downed by strong OK storms years ago and the wood was dry and hardened, 30+ inches. I could lie and say it cut like butter, but that was not the case. The saw did cut these two 30+ inch trees with very little effort, minimal bogging and no kick back; what more could you ask for. The temps were in the 100° range and the saw started every time with no problems. I am very pleased with this saw and I am anxiously awaiting my next wood cutting outing. The chain lasted throughout this day, 4+ straight hours and is still sharp for the next day of cutting. The bar seems to be fine the paint did burn off and a little blueing from the heat, seems like it oiled just fine. My saw used one tank of bar oil at the same rate as the fuel tank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw changes everything! I like this saw so much I have no choice but to review it. My saw is the MS291 C-BEQ.First off I would like to say the quick chain adjuster saves me time. There is no need for a sharp saw tool in my pocket irritating or possibly jabbing me. Normally I will not carry a saw tool in the hardwoods for this reason and failed to tighten my chain enough,"Safety Hazard". I was concerned about the quick adjust strength apposed to the typical two bolts for holding the bar and chain on. Now that I've used it and seen the stud diameter I'm sure the bar would bend before the stud snaps. It is important to clean the chips out of the gear for the quick adjust weekly to keep it working good. Do this and you'll never have a problem. I also like the fact that the chain thumb adjuster is bigger than smaller models and easier on my thumb."Very easy to start". I love this feature because I start and stop my saw a lot. The way I like to start it is with little tugs building pressure in the recoil. It is so fast that, by the time your eyes find and your hand presses the compression release on your saw, my saw is running!Quick stop feature will pay for itself. When I am done cutting I let go of the handle break, within a second the chain stops and I step to my next position and right back to it. With typical saws it takes longer for the chain to quit spinning before I switch my footing. This shaves at least 1 second per block or about 20 minutes a day for me! When cutting down trees I can let go of the handle and run to my safe spot without the fear of falling on a spinning chain.I would also like to say that this saw will cut hard maple as fast as my 66cc name brand saw, but weighing in at almost 5 pounds less so I can work all day. I am very critical of the products I use. I rarely find a product I can't complain about design, materials or assembly. I'm fairly certain this is the first time ever!Nick M.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy starting and plenty of power! My saw is the 290 farmboss, had it about 7 years and haven't had a problem with it yet! Starts every time I go to use it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Takes a little getting used to but runs great I special ordered the MS 291 C-BEQ from a local dealer since nobody had one in stock and some dealers tried to talk me out of it, saying I didn't need the features of the saw. It took a little getting used to the Easy2Start feature and if not careful in the beginning, you can easily flood the motor. However, once you get used to how to start the saw it's so easy...much more so than a normal chain saw. The saw is lightweight, has plenty of power and is very smooth. Since I just got the saw I haven't used the Quick Chain Adjuster feature yet, but look forward to not needing a separate tool to tighten the chain. Overall, it's a quality built saw (made in Germany) and I'm glad I spent the extra money for it's features. I'm sure I'll be using it 20+ years from now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst piece of equipment I have ever owned! Purchased Chainsaw November 2013. Moderate use, 5-6 pickup loads of firewood per year. I have replaced the coil & sparkplug boot. I am not going to repair it for a third time because the repair will cost over half the price of a new saw! I will never buy another STIHL product!
