Rated 4 out of 5 by from SUPER LIGHT AND DEPENDABLE I needed a light chainsaw for limbing, trimming and cutting smaller branches so the local STIHL dealer recommended the MS 193. The saw is very light, perfectly balanced with a 14-inch bar and you can work with it all day without ever feeling its weight. Beautiful design, too. It is easy to start and it handles the jobs it is intended for perfectly. It is extremely quiet and the vibration dampening is superb. The saw itself is Made in the USA and the 14-inch bar mine came with was Made In Germany. It has sufficient power to cut through limbs and branches, and logs 6-8 inches diameter. If the chain binds, the power is cut off automatically, which is a great safety feature. In my particular case, once the saw warmed up when first started, the idling RPM went up noticeably. It took a little bit of adjustment of the L and LA settings to get it to run perfectly. It really wasn't a big deal, but it took me by surprise; having become used to professional STIHL saws I wasn't expecting this. Totally unexpected and very disappointing were the plastic "dogs" (bumper spikes) and even more so the impossibility to replace them with steel ones. Even though these plastic dogs are perhaps sufficient and reliable, and perhaps even perfectly adequate according to STIHL engineers and designers, they are just laughable and give the saw a very cheap appearance. Those of you who are used to professional series STIHL saws will probably find the MS 193 lacking in quality. This should not be taken as criticism; it is after all to be expected knowing that the MS 193 belongs to the "Farm & Ranch" series. I wish STIHL would, one day, make a professional-series super-light small chainsaw in the 14-inch bar size. I'd buy one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, starts easily, runs well. Seems to stay well cooled with continuous use. Bought to help clear up dozens of sick and fallen trees on the family property. It supplements an MS 271 and an MS461. The saw, being light, is an excellent tool for limbing and bucking appropiately sized fallen timber. It starts and runs well. After break, in it runs very smoothly and has good throttle response. It is surprisingly stronger than what I expected from a saw rated at less than 2 horsepower. I have found that I use it for diameters greater than what I probably should. I let the 14 inch bar and chain do the cutting. I have yet to sharpen or change the green chain after hrs of use. It is still sharp. I have kept the chain out of the dirt, of course that helps. I run high octane premix with no problems. I realize that it is not a professional grade saw and understand it's intended use. It is without question a respectable solid tool.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the price We purchased this saw as a replacement for the MS 170. I used it 1 time and put it down and grabbed the ole MS 170 to finish the job. It's very underpowered compared to the 170.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small stud holding bar and cover on into thin plastic molded fuel tank! This is the first STIHL chain saw that I purchased that I use for climbing trees on the weekends that works for me. The saw has worked flawlessly until recently when cutting some limbs off and the chain jumped off. After looking onto the problem, found that the stud holding the bar and cover on pulled out of the plastic mount {it is approximately size of a 5/16-18 bolt but metric}. Took it my local STIHL dealer and said it is a common problem that they can't fix so I fixed by taping the hole out to 7/16-14 and making a new bolt on my lathe. But the plastic molded around the stud is very thin with little support in the fuel tank. Good luck on your decision.Bill

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this saw This is our second 193. We use these for clearing pockets of streamside willows and it works like a dream. We have a 12" bar on both with the yellow chain and almost couldn't be happier. The only downside is they're occasionally temperamental to start/keep running, no matter the carb adjustment. The 12" bar is great on these as the willow whips can't get underneath the chain to derail it yet it's long enough to get through thicker (6") limbs with ease. The light weight is also a huge plus, especially when we're packing them around all day. Also, they're surprisingly fuel efficient for the amount of work they can do. Yeah, they're kinda expensive but in this arena you definitely get what you pay for.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I was expecting more from a STIHL I had it for a week and then in the shop. I would not keep running. Not sure if it is the saw's problem. The young man that sold me the saw "adjusted" the carb, so I took it back to have the mechanic look at it. He said it would take a few days... meanwhile, the pile of logs that need to be cut up are still sitting there. Getting very frustrated!!
