Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny, LOVE this machine! I am a fence contractor in Austin, TX, so I use this machine on a daily basis. I own a larger, more powerful one-man auger that you frequently see at rental facilities, but loading and unloading this other machine at 175 lbs by myself got to be a problem on jobs where I wasn't pulling a trailer with a low deck height. I have used at least 5 or 6 other brands through rentals or purchase, so I have a pretty good cross section of products with which to compare the BT131. After several weeks of web research, I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on this machine due to its light weight and compact design (it fits easily on the passenger side floorboard of my truck). I was slightly anxious and skeptical that it would have the grunt to dig in the conditions that are common here in Austin; heavy hard pan clay and caliche on the east side and limestone on the west side. Now nothing short of a skid steer with a few hundred pounds of downforce will dig solid limestone, but for all other conditions this machine has far exceeded my expectations! I actually thought the little clutch bar that hits your leg to disengage the engine when you hit an underground obstruction was a little goofy and gimmecky. Wrong about that too! Anyone who has used other one-man augers before has experienced the beating that you receive despite the various claims of different anti-shock and clutch mechanisms. This thing actually works flawlessly and I wish I had discovered this auger years ago.So other pros...super light, easy to tote around a job site. Its great because you can lay it down on the side of its roll cage if you need to switch over to a root bar or your hand diggers to clear out a large root or loose soil and it stays running smoothly at idle till you pick it back up again.Power-wise, I've actually never been able to bog it down. It maintains steady power, or in the event of hitting something particularly hard it will just pop the clutch bar. So even as small and light as this powerhead is, with its gearing it has plenty of oomph to dig in just about any condition you can throw at it. Make sure you don't make the initial mistake that I did, which was trying to use off-brand auger bits from other machines that I already owned. The Stihl bits are perfectly matched for this machine and are deceptively efficient and sturdy despite how they look on the shelf. The thought and engineering that is evident in each Stihl tool that I have purchased is unmatched by any other brand that I know of. If Stihl makes a tool that fits your application, you just can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I highly recommend this post holder auger!! Huge time saver, dependable, more then enough power, light weight and one main important feature, The safety bar!! I was putting in some post holes in ground with hard clay with rocks and tree roots. Instead of causing serious injury (broken wrist or jerking your shoulder out of socket) or just kicking me off the digger the auger stops, but the motor will still runs. Saved my Beacon!! I research several post hole diggers, with out naming them, they were all less expensive, no safety devise, larger motors but cheaply built. I would rather spend more but save money down the road and have a piece of equipment that will give me years of service. Not to mention I would rather buy from a dealer ( Allseasons power equipment in Eugene Ore Great Folks with super Service!) then if there are any issues you have a trusted dealer that can help you out!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great around the farm and my grave digging business I dig graves, and this machine really does a great job for digging for cremation urns, vaults etc...definitely easier than a shovel, and cheaper than hauling a mini excavator for this size job...lsvery useful around the farm for putting in temporary corner posts for electric fences and other multiple uses...plan to put in some permanent fencing, using this to dig holes for concrete encased oilfield pipe posts...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid performer Bought this auger to support our custom mailbox business and it’s done a solid job.Quality and reliability are key for our business. This is why we went with Stihl over other augers that were much less expensive.Cutting through undisturbed soil, clay, gravel and smaller roots is no problem with the 8 inch auger bit. A hole takes only a minute or so to complete. Great job Stihl team!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldnt ask for More I'm a 60 year old female who decided to install the earth anchors for my new shed myself. I've always been one to do anything I can myself. Well turned out that the shed required ten 30" anchors. I tried twisting one all the way down but couldn't get in down further than about 24 inches. I rented this auger and, wow, am so glad I did. It is extremely easy to use, very light, and started up after 2nd pull each time. I had all of the holes done in no time. Worked like a charm. If I had the need to buy one, this Stihl BT131 would be it. You wont be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power Used one in Canada fishing, we punched through 3 ft of ice on lake Winnipeg with no trouble what so ever. The nice thing when I buy one, is that it doubles for summer work as well as winter fun.
