Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, its worth paying more for a Stihl This will be one part of a two part review for the Stihl BT131 earth auger. I am a fence contractor in Austin, Texas, which means that I deal with a wide variety of digging conditions. On the west side there is nothing but limestone, on the east side clay or black soil, and quite a few areas with a mix of clay, dirt and limestone chunks that were graded back into the yard after home construction was completed. So I bought the Stihl auger head but thought I would save some money by using some auger bits i already had for a much cheaper machine using a splined adapter. The machine worked and ran well, but I felt like I should be getting more speed and ease of digging. So, I bit the bullet and went back in to my dealer (HIll Country Outdoor Power) and picked up the Stihl brand 5.9" auger bit.Completely different experience! The downforce I had to exert to get the auger to dig seemed almost cut in half, and the speed of diggin was at least 50% faster. I was actually digging into compacted road base, with loose rocks and caliche for the first 12" and this auger bit had NO PROBLEM digging through the packed rock. And of course digging through the underlying soil was a joke. To be honest, I was very skeptical of the usefulness of this machine and auger combo because of how small and light it is. VERY surprised by the performance and capability of the BT 131 and auger bits by Stihl. I know it won't dig in solid limestone, but for any other condition you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Stihl earth auger (post hole digger) is great! Lightweight and easy to handle! I have used three other brands of gas powered post hole diggers and the Stihl is the easiest one to use! The clutch break away bar is great also. When the digger catches while digging, the break away bar will touch your leg and stop the auger from turning and is easy on your hands and arms. The only item that I would like to see changed is the length of the 6" inch auger. If it was about 3 inches longer the hole would be just about the right depth for my application. Stihl does make an 18" long extension but it would be nice if they could make 3" and 6" extensions available!
