Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent. reliable cutter. Durable, Cuts Well I use this hedge trimmer to trim along the Appalachian Trail. I bought it about a year ago and have over 100 hours on it. It is a remarkable piece of gear. Because the motor is only powering a a reciprocating cutting blade, the RPMs are low so the machine is quiet and has low vibration. A plus if vibrating tools give you numb fingers. In fact just a little power above idle is often all it takes. The trimmer cuts most anything less then the diameter of a pinky finger with easy and larger limbs with some patience (although that's outside it's intended range). The trimmer is an excellent choice for cutting woody stemmed plants like briars, raspberry, wild multiflora rose [take that you ugly, gnarly weed. Multiflora rose is a serpentine rose that is really hard to trim by hand as it's all entangled with 6 to 8 foot or longer tendrils], small saplings, bittersweet, ornamental grasses and even thinner grasses with patience. For me, this is better then a weed wacker and I really haven't found much it won't cut. Use care around power and ground lines as it will make history of a soft copper ground or extension cord. On the Appalachian Trail this tool is great for trimming the briars, low saplings, and even the upper branches along the walkway at waist height or higher - although I bought it more for trimming woody stemmed plants off neatly at the ground. It's nice cut looks like it was hand trimmed and with proper use there is nothing to pick up as only short pieces are left to decompose. Replaces a crew of 6 or 8 folks with 1 person.I also have a long private driveway, and this is the tool to trim back those trees and sticker bushes including the wild rose. Cutting in short passes leaves 1 or 2 inch pieces on the ground and little other sign that there was ever a multiflora rose or bittersweet invasive plant there. All in all, for heavy cutting in a wooded area, under power lines, maintaining a hiking trail or a long private lane -- even taking care of a long fence row, this is a much better tool that a string trimmer. I haven't actually used it on hedges but am sure it could do that task well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Reliable Bought this product thinking it was the best but using it for the first time, the hedge trimmer blades do not move and smoke comes out of the shaft. Have had great luck with Stihl but not this hedge trimmer. No customer service on the weekends. Disappointed and frustrated.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Problem with drive from motor to cutting head Bought new...used for 30 minutes and did a great job. Next time I used it the cutting head would not engage. Took back to dealer who repaired it. He said the drive from motor was not seated properly. Next time I used it, the cutting portion would not engage. Phoned dealer and he walked me thru how to loosen two screws and seat drive shaft into head. It is now workingDESIGN FLAW?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like the adjustable cutting head This product is solid and works well. Reading other reviews I agree it is a bit on the heavy side however I have found using a shoulder harness (from Stihl) it can be adjusted for much more ease of use while taking the full weight off your hands and arms while using the unit. It cuts well and in my case as an older man greatly helps the strain of reaching with arms fully extended as needed on my HS45 model. Also several times trimming over the years I had the unfortunate problem of wasps nests and getting stung up close to the hedge when their disturbed, with this unit your much farther away and greatly reduce the chance of that happening. Smooth operation and less vibration also made this model better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Hedge Trimmer I have owned! I have owned many of the cheaper trimmers from Home Depot and Lowes. At first there was a bit of sticker shock. However, you really do get what you pay for. What used to take me the majority of the day to accomplish I finished in just two hours. I love the extended reach and adjustable angle. Easy to use and lots of power. Engine is not loud and very little vibration on the hands. I am now a true Sthil fan!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Theres room for improvement. I have used this on a few occasions barrowed dont The engine lacks RPMs so its wont cut as fast as some other hedge cutters. The blade wont go thought thicker bushes. where as my other hedge cutter will. There a small power band on that engine almost all or nothing. It would be very hard to part with money for this unit. The handle gets hung up in what you are cutting. Its very heavy tires you out fast. i noticed it was a bit off balance. I would like to see a engine that has more rpms so the blade dont bind up to much. I am very disapointed in this unit and will be considering other brands
