SALEM, Ore. (Sept. 6, 2011) – The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by Ram Trucks returned to the Oregon State Fair for a second year Aug. 26-28, 2011. In front of ESPNU cameras, Daniel Jones of Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC, chopped and sawed his way to a STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Collegiate Championship victory. Jones beat out five of the top collegiate competitors for not only bragging rights, but the opportunity to be a part of the international rookie relay team at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series presented by Ram Trucks World Championship in Roermond, Holland Sept. 3-4. With this win Jones also earned a spot as a professional competitor in the 2012 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series.

All of the collegiate competitors showed outstanding skills and potential. Walt Page of Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo took second-place honors, Tim Benedict of Penn State University took third, Scooter Cogar of Virginia Tech claimed fourth and Andrew Gollnick of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and Schuyler VanAuken of Paul Smith's College tied for fifth.

"The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series was created to discover and nurture the next generation of American lumberjacks," said Brad Sorgen, producer of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series. "The talent, dedication and professionalism of this year’s collegiate competitors have been especially impressive, and we are excited to see them continue to grow and enter the professional ranks."

Going into the final event of the championship, the competition was fierce between Jones and runner-up Page. Jones delivered a 13.97 second run in the single buck event, which not only won him the single buck and the Collegiate Championship title, but beat the U.S. Championship times of professional lumberjack legends Mike Sullivan, Mel Lentz and David Bolstad.

"That's my best time ever," Jones told STIHLTIMBERSPORTS.US. "I was using a more aggressive saw than the ones I used in the past. I practiced on the weekends and on some weekdays with professional STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series competitors, Jimmy Lawrence and Daryl Weakland. They taught me a lot and got me to where I need to be."

Collegiate competitors from more than 60 colleges and universities across the country competed in the 2011 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series Regional Qualifiers. One winner from each region and a wildcard pick advanced to the Championship. The six finalists faced off at the Championships in four chopping and sawing disciplines including the single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop.
