Virginia Beach, Va. (March 22, 2011) – The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by the Ram Truck Brand, one of the longest running sports programs on ESPN, kicked off its 26th season as the premier lumberjack competition series with the launch of a new, enhanced fan site. Known as the “Original Extreme Sport”, the Series, seen by millions worldwide each year, launched the site to capitalize on the growing popularity of the sport. The site, STIHLTIMBERSPORTS.US enables fans to have greater access to more information about the Series and, in conjunction with social media outlets, more interaction, creating a stronger online community.

“We’re excited to kick off the 2011 season with our new and improved fan site,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager, STIHL Inc. “Our primary goal is create an online resource where fans can get rare behind-the-scenes access and, with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series’ social media platforms, become an active part of the original extreme sport.”

Dedicated to offering a more involved experience for fans of the most skilled professional and collegiate lumberjack and jills in the U.S. and around the world, the new site provides direct access to competition updates, real-time results, photos, exclusive videos on YouTube and firsthand experiences from competitors. Additionally, the new fan site provides a platform for visitors to connect with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series competitors and fans from around the world by joining the online community on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

STIHLTIMBERSPORTS.US is the first of many country-based fan sites STIHL will launch throughout the year. Additional countries include: Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Spain and Belgium.

Established in 1985, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series attracts the world’s top lumberjack athletes in a competition based on historic logging techniques. The Series is seen by more than 20 million viewers annually in more than 62 countries on networks such as Eurosport and ESPN2, where it is one of the longest running shows.

Since 2003, the Collegiate Series has traveled to college campuses across the country to seek out the best amateur athletes and give them the opportunity to advance in the sport. More than 50 universities and colleges presently compete in the Series. The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series grooms student athletes to one day take their place among the professional elite. Additionally, ESPNU provides a national platform to not only highlight the competition and the sport, but also spotlight the hosting schools and their forestry programs in the Collegiate Series competition shows.
