Virginia Beach, Va. (March 10, 2011) –STIHL Inc., creator and producer of the premier lumberjack sports event the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by the Ram Truck brand, announced today the roster of U.S. professional lumberjacks competing in the 2011 season of its popular competition. Returning to its roots, the Series will once again host regional qualifiers with U.S. athletes competing for the chance to advance to the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series U.S. Championship, which will return for a second year to the Oregon State Fair Aug. 26-28, 2011. The Series, seen by millions around the world, airs on ESPN2, this year for the first time in HD. Building on the popularity of its Collegiate Series, STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series organizers decided to produce the five regional professional qualifiers in conjunction with the five collegiate qualifiers at campuses around the country.

“We’re excited about the new 2011 format, which places extra focus on the continued growth of our American competitors,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager, STIHL Inc. “Collegiate athletes will be able to compete side by side with professionals, and fans will get twice the action at each regional event.”

The new format of the “Original Extreme Sport” also expands the competitor pool from 32 to 50, enabling more athletes to enter the competition than ever before. The 2011 roster features many former collegiate contenders who have turned pro, including Corey Christians, Adrian Flygt, David Green Adam LaSalle, Will Roberts, Nathan Waterfield, Logan Scarborough and Matt Slingerland.

The 2011 qualifiers will be held at the University of Georgia March 17-19, California Polytechnic University March 24-26, Purdue University April 9, Penn State University-Mont Alto April 16-17and SUNY-Cobleskill April 29-30 with ESPN2 and ESPNU cameras onsite to film the wood-chopping action. The pro competition consists of 10 pro athletes competing in six professional lumberjack disciplines: the hot saw, single buck, springboard chop, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop. The qualifiers will result in the top four pro athletes from each region advancing to the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series U.S. Championship, which will challenge the lumberjacks in the same six chopping and sawing disciplines.

The winner of the competition will be crowned the U.S. Champion and will represent the country at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series World Championship, being held this year in Holland, Saturday, Sept. 3-Sunday, Sept. 4.  Schedule details are available at .

Since its inception in 1985, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series has challenged the world’s best competitors in lumberjack sports. Over the years the Series has gained popularity and expanded to 19 countries including athletes from USA, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Benelux and Germany, all looking to earn a place in the World Championships. New Zealander Jason Wynyard holds the title of 2010 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS World Champion. Arden Cogar Jr. from West Virginia holds the 2010 U.S. STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series Champion title.

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship, held every year in conjunction with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS U.S. Championship, pits the five regional winners and one wild card athlete against each other in four professional disciplines: single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop.  The top contender earns the title of 2011 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series champion and an automatic ticket to the 2012 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series where they will compete among the professional ranks. North Carolina State’s Logan Scarborough holds the title of 2010 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Champion. The Collegiate Series is seen on ESPNU.

Additionally, the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series boom run and speed climb specialty disciplines will also take place throughout the three-day event in Oregon. Eight boom runners and speed climbers will compete in a bracket elimination format to determine the U.S. champion in each discipline.
