Jim, John and Tom Herbert
Bud Herbert Motors

Not every family business can claim they've been in operation for 140 years. Bud Herbert Motors can. Their business began in 1875, when Jim Herbert’s great, great grandfather emigrated from Germany.

"The business started as a furniture manufacturer with my great grandfather coming over from Germany, then evolved into the automobile business, and finally, after World War II, into the outdoor power equipment business that we have today," said Tom Herbert, fourth generation business owner.

The shop has seen its ups and downs, including a historic flood in 1937 that destroyed the business – and submerged much of Cincinnati. But the business has endured, and more importantly, evolved.

"If there’s one thing I’ve learned from our family business is that you have to evolve. You have to always look for new things. New ways to improve. New products. New ways to keep the customer happy. If you’re not evolving, you’re not growing… and if you’re not growing, you’re not going to be in business very long,” said Jim Herbert.

Today, Bud Herbert Motors is still very much a family operation. They have cousins, dads, moms and aunts working here. And when a customer walks in, John Herbert makes sure they become part of the family as well:

"Customers are just so thankful that we're willing to ask questions and work through their situation and try to recommend the right product for them. That's what STIHL Dealers are all about."
