VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (May 16, 2013) – STIHL Inc., creator and producer of the world’s premier lumberjack competition, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series presented by Ram Trucks, announced today the 2013 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Championship lineup. Five regional winners and a wildcard pick will advance to the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series Collegiate Championship at The Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., June 9.

This year’s top collegiate competitors include: Josh Hussey, NC State University, Southern Collegiate Champion; Ben Hansen, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Midwest Collegiate Champion; Caleb Hawkins, Warren Wilson College, Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Champion; Travis Courser, Unity College, Northeast Collegiate Champion and David Gouveia, Northern Arizona University, Western Collegiate Champion. Additionally Garrett Gregorek of Paul Smiths College, will round out the competition field as the wildcard selection. “This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Collegiate Series and we are thrilled with the great strides the Series has made since its inaugural season in 2003,” said Brad Sorgen, producer of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series. “The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series enables these talented young lumberjack athletes to thrive as professionals by granting access to the resources they need to be successful.”

These collegiate athletes will face off in four lumberjack disciplines, the single buck, standing block chop, stock saw and underhand chop, to determine the nation’s collegiate champion. The champion earns a spot competing on the international rookie relay team in the 2013 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany Oct. 25-26 and an automatic spot in the 2014 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional Series. The Collegiate Championship will be held in conjunction with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional U.S. Championship, which runs from June 7-9.

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series judges selected Gregorek as the 2013 wildcard pick due to his impressive performance at the Northeast Collegiate Qualifier in April. This up-and-comer from Brandon, Vt. lost his shot at the Northeast Qualifier title after disqualifying in the stock saw, but placed in the top five in every other discipline, showing a great deal of potential which earned him the wildcard honor. In the Collegiate Series, the wildcard pick is selected to give a second chance to an athlete who had a strong performance at the regional qualifier, but just missed the cut to make it to the Championship.

Midwest Collegiate Champion, Hansen will make his second consecutive appearance in this year’s Collegiate Championship after winning the Midwest regional event in 2012 and placing sixth overall in the Championship.

In 2003, STIHL created the Collegiate Series to help develop future U.S. pro competitors. The Collegiate Series travels to college campuses across the country with the ESPNU, Outdoor Channel and TUFF TV cameras to seek out the best amateur athletes and has grown from five participating schools to nearly 60 in the last 11 years.

ESPNU, Outdoor Channel and TUFF TV cameras will be on site to capture the competition. The 2013 Collegiate Championship will air on Outdoor Channel Sunday, June 16 at 3 p.m. ET. ESPNU air dates and times for the 2013 season will be announced at a later date.
