NORFOLK, Va. (June 21, 2014) - The 2014 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® U.S. Pro champion has been crowned. Diana, W.Va. native, Matt Cogar defeated seven of the country's best lumberjack athletes to win the title tonight in front of over 4,000 ecstatic fans at Norfolk Scope Arena. Arden Cogar, Jr. and "Super" Dave Jewett tied for second place, while Nathan "Bucket" Waterfield finished fourth.

"It's still sinking in. To do well against these guys...you can't ask for better competitors," said Matt Cogar at the medal ceremony. "I knew I had to bring my A game and keep a level head the entire time. Props to everyone; we had such a good day."

Yesterday, the top 16 U.S. lumberjack athletes faced off, with the four best from two pools advancing to this evening's championship. They competed in six disciplines - the springboard chop, stock saw, standing block chop, single buck, underhand chop and hot saw - in front of a packed, loud crowd. Matt Cogar was stellar all evening, winning two of the six events outright. He set the bar high in the first event of the evening, the springboard chop, posting a 2014 U.S. Pro season record, and his personal best time of 45.94 seconds. He's the first U.S. athlete to win back-to-back titles since Mel Lentz in 1991 and 1992.

"It's hard to win this competition two years in a row, but Matt showed just what a versatile competitor he is today," said Brad Sorgen, executive producer of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series. "This championship featured some of our best athletes to date, and we're thrilled to have had such a great crowd at Norfolk Scope cheering them on."

Arden Cogar, Jr. and Dave Jewett posted the fastest times of the day in the underhand chop and single buck disciplines, respectively. After Waterfield, the athletes finished in the following places: Mel Lentz (fifth), Walt Page (sixth), Calvin Willard (seventh) and Branden Sirguy (eighth). The excitement of tonight's festivities validated why the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series is known as "The Original Extreme Sport."

Along with earning the designation of the best lumberjack athlete in the country, Matt Cogar was awarded a brand new Ram Truck for his win. He'll also represent the U.S. team at the World Championship in Austria in November, and be joined by Arden Cogar, Jr., Jewett and Waterfield.

The U.S. Championship weekend will conclude tomorrow with the Collegiate Championship, where the top six collegiate athletes from the qualifier rounds will go head-to-head in four lumberjack disciplines including the underhand chop, stock saw, standing block chop and single buck. The Championship will be followed by professional and collegiate relay events.
