How did you get involved in lumberjack sports?
My father, Earl, and my Uncle Hansford were loggers who played with wood chopping, but my first cousins Arden and Jack got us started. Arden and Jack organized the Webster County Woodchopping Festival when I was a boy. My brothers Bill and Guy started chopping and sawing and I started doing it to have something to do on weekends during the summer.
When did you begin participating/competing in lumberjack sports and the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series?
I competed in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series and made the finals in 1997. I didn't compete again on the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series until 2011. I have something to prove to myself as I should have made the second round last year but for a mistake in the placement of my slab nails and how my springboard block was nailed up.
How do you train for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series and other lumberjack competitions?
I chop a log with Matthew every now and then, but otherwise I just split a lot of firewood and work in the woods.
Are you related to any current or former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series competitors?
My son Matthew placed third last year in the US STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series. He and my first cousin, Arden Jr., have been on the US STIHL TIMBERSPORTS team the past two years. Arden Jr.'s father, Arden Sr., competed in the Series well into his 60s until he retired sometime in the late 90s. He still chops, but he doesn't compete in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series.
Best/strongest STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series discipline:
My best discipline is likely the springboard. I don't know why, but I always make good springboard holes. My strongest event is likely the standing block or the hot saw. I can still whip those ones off pretty darn quick for a not so young man.
Any advice for the collegiate competitors?
If you're going to do something commit to it. Don't go through the motions.
What pro athlete/celebrity would you like to see try one of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series disciplines?
I'd like to see any NASCAR driver run a hot saw. It's one thing to have it all around you; but it's completely another to have it in your hands.
Name three songs on your training/working out playlist?
I enjoy Gospel and Bluegrass.
Proudest moment in your life so far:
Everything involving my wonderful wife, Agnes, and my three children, Jennifer, Matthew, and Abbigale.
Anything else you'd like to share?
My kids are grown and all but one is out of the house. I reckon I might start to chop more.
