Rated 5 out of 5 by Great power, easy start I was going to repair my old Homelite trimmer and decided to upgrade to this Stihl. Glad I did, a lot more power and easier to use. September 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by It starts easily every time We have 2 Stihl trimmers, the older FS-55 and the new FS-56. After living with other brands for years I finally gave up and got our first one. Then again after giving up on the one we had at our 2nd home, got the second one. My wife and I both use them, just today my wife said "I love that Stihl, it starts so easily". There is no way I'd ever buy another brand, no matter what kind of "good deal" it is. #As a result, I've replaced both our chainsaw and blower/shredder with Stihl# September 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a workhorse I've had the Stihl FS-56-RC for while now, and it has performed great. Stihl is the easiest starting trimmer on the market. The FS-56-RC usually starts on the FIRST pull, but always on second. Idle is perfect, engine never dies. The included shoulder strap works great, spend time adjusting correctly, and don't let anyone readjust. CTE in Montgomery helped me select the FS-56-RC, Calvin was very helpful in demonstrating the correct start procedure. This thing will cut too. Engine is strong. The You just can't beat a STIHL. Rated 4 out of 5 by Very satisfied with a good quality product I have had the FS 56 RC for about two months. I owned a Ryobi previously. The Ryobi was exceptionally difficult to start, time consuming to restring, and would die when put at an angle. This Stihl has none of those issues thus far. It is easy to start and easy to get to the string. It runs smoothly (though, like a Harley, it vibrates a lot at idle - though it is not hard on me). I can edge my 3/4 acre lot in about 2/3 of the time is used to, and much more easily.I have never used a straight shaft, and am still learning it. However, I have found that I like it better and it is easier to control (and get under the lower brush).I did not rate the dependability, as I have only put fewer than 10 hours on it so far.A couple of things I have learned are: the diamond shaped string is more durable and breaks less (and lasts longer) on this matching than the normal round string...I am using .095 p, and it is adequate for all normal grass and small weeds. The unit does get warm on the back of the engine. After about 45 min of constant running, it seems to get hot. While that hasn't affected the running of the edger, the first time it happened, it led me to believe that I needed to let it cool down a little bit. That happened only once, and coincided with the need to restring it. About 10 mins later, I was using it again, and did not notice it.This is my first Stihl product. Overall, this seems to be better quality than the Toro, Husqvarna, and other units I was comparing it to, though it is also slightly more expensive than those. It did come with a strap that attaches to the shaft, that allows you to support some of the weight on your shoulders, which was a bonus feature. August 31, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Machine Easy and reliable starting. Excellent overall machine. Complaints I read about original string breaking are true, but not a machine deficiency. It only happens with large and hardened stalks. Head is excellent and easy to load. I have been using .105 string instead of .095 on my old machine for over 20 years with much better results. This machine can easily handle it also to minimize that complaint. Being sold only by servicing dealers is also a definite plus. Getting a 4 year warranty by just buying a six pack of oil puts it way over the top. August 31, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Useless due to string failures Just bought this trimmer new from dealer two days ago ... except once (when it ran for about 10 minutes), it has not run for more than 3 minutes without breaking the string or retracting it (both ends) completely into the trimmer head. I bought a new replacement spool and experienced exactly the same thing.I have seen positive reviews that mentioned this defect along with the pluses. What good are the pluses if the usability is so poor. I'm betting that everyone else's time is as important and limited as mine is, so I just cannot understand that.I plan on asking the dealer to take this product back and return my money. Rated 3 out of 5 by Been in shop 3 times in 5 years Bought this the next season after buying an Echo, the Ehco did not have enough power for me and this was a great powerful trimmer for the first season. It started fine but ran rough fro the start. It is now in the shop again, at another repair shop to see if they can adjust the engine to start and run smoothly. I have almost put enough money in this head to have bought another. I would go to a different brand if I didn't have expensive heads for this. Too much money wrapped up in this; if this repair costs morre than $100 I may buy a new power head and hope for better August 27, 2014
