Rated 2 out of 5 by pricey trimmer for such limited performance Purchased the FS55R last fall and so far trimming and in general weed cutting the unit is great! Proud to see a tool of this nature made in the USA.The trouble starts when edging along the sidewalk, curb and drive. I'll edge out 3 to 4 feet then have to stop to pull out tangled line in the spool. The "tap" feed . . just will not work. Either there is no line at all protruding the spool or one side will be about 1 inch and nothing on the other. Am I missing something or is this trimmer a dud when edging. This is one thing I made very clear to the salesperson that I had a lot of edging to do and his reply was "this is the machine to do the job". I will be going back this week , a second time, to try and solve the problem. May 15, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 Not reliable product. Hard to start and keep running. My Stihl 55R is a very unreliable device. Not dependable at all. May 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by My first Stihl and love this trimmer! Other people had weird experiences...like they reviewed a different trimmmer entirely! Mine starts great, whacks everything I want it to, best of all, lightweight and like the self-feeding string! Forget those other trimmers where you load short strings all the time! I have lots of rocks as well as weeds, and have had to replace the heads (this season will be the second new head) as they wear down on the rocks. No biggie...all the other benefits are worth it! Thanks for making such a great product, Stihl! Somebody mentioned a winterizing routine on youtube...I'm going to check that out. April 30, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Much too difficult. hard to start. Can't keep it at a steady speed, it keeps running away or slowing down to idle. Instructions are confusing. Did not get a mower head instruction sheet with purchase. So many makes, models accessories with multiple model numbers it is totally confusing and much more difficult that it should be. Going back to my old other make that I thought i was going to improve on by buying a stilhl. Sorry. April 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great product This is a great trimmer, always starts on the second pull, pleanty of power, hardley ever needs re-strung. i folwed STIHIL'S winterization procedure off youtube and sure enough I fueled it at the begining of the season and it started right up and ran flawless. everyone who reviewed this product poorly should consult the owners maunal before use and there results would be different. Rated 5 out of 5 by Dont understand what everyone is complaining about. I bought the FS55R last year and have had no issues with it at all. I use fresh fuel, Quality oil and I follow the mix instructions in the manual. Guess what, It starts easily EVERY TIME!!! This unit has plenty of power to knock down anything I have asked it to. I could not be happier with it. Buy it, Use it hard, Take care of it and it will last you a lifetime. -D April 13, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by FS r 55 the FS55 R is the worst trimmer I have ever owned. this is the last Stihl product I will ever buy will never recommend this Stihl product to anyone April 9, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not reliable I had a cheap curved shaft string trimmer for years that would start reliably each time. This thing never starts correctly. I follow the instructions to the letter and it just floods out. It now takes me an extra half hour to do my yard work each week, due to fiddling with this thing every single time. The string hangs up internally and I am constantly removing the head to fix it. Very dissatisfied. April 6, 2013
