    Good for tropic vegitation
Living on a Caribbean island with a garden that has Bougainville, Faya Lobi, Jasmine, Wayaca, Oliander and many other plants, it has been proven to be a perfect tool to maintain the garden within a reasonable time. The Caribbean climate may be nice for tourists (it really is) but working in the garden under the sun can be something of a challenge. The machine works very efficient, fast and easy. Although after a couple of hours it gets heavy to handle but on the other hand if you look what ... read more others are doing by hand or other machines, I really prefer the HS 81R. The gearbox is sturdy and the anti-vibration works as it should, with all that said this machine is a perfect solution to trim the overgrown and the strong plants. Absolute reliable if handled with care and maintained as instructed. Most to all maintenance can be done by yourself if you have some technical experience, if not the manual will give good guidance. Otherwise the dealer will be more then happy to help you.

    Versatile and powerful
I have had this trimmer for 3 years now and feel comfortable rating it. It has great power and ergonomics. The rotating rear handle is very comfortable and easily adjusted to suit any cutting angle. I purchased the "R" model to use for cutting back large hedges to a more manageable size, as well as maintaining leafy shrubs. I find that it cuts well in both applications. It will zip through 1 1/4" limbs with ease, and I have no issue shaping leafy shrubs perfectly. The trimmer is well balanced ... read more with a 30" blade and is relatively fuel efficient, although the fuel tank is a tad small, which I see has been corrected in the 82R. It was on the pricier side of trimmers I had looked at, but certainly is worth the money if you have a volume and variety of trimming to do. I use the HP ultra oil and 93 octane ethanol free fuel, 1 pull start every time.

    Best Trimmer I've ever used.
I bought this trimmer on the recommendation of a friend. It has been everything he said and more. Vibration is a minimum. The blades cut through anything they fit around. I have thick multiflora. now I can clear it without having to get my hands and arms cut up from the thorns. I have miles of trails to keep clear and this has let me get ahead on this task for the first time ever. It is actually a pleasure to get out there and get the work done with this trimmer. The right tool for the job makes ... read more all the difference. I highly recommend this product.

    Amazing!!
This is a good product being for the price and power it puts out. I also own the HL 100, and both leave quality work behind. It's perfect for the smaller bushes and shrubs and everything in between.

    Elegant tool
I'm a professional landscaper who's been watching the Stihl battery line for some time. I decided to jump in and buy the HLA 85 as my first battery powered tool purchase. So far, I'm very happy with it! It feels space age and elegant. It's incredibly quiet, the variable speed trigger is great, and my battery (AP 180) still has four green bars on the charge meter even after pruning several small hedges. This is not a light weight tool, and is built with high quality materials; the cutting side ... read more is still almost as heavy as a gas powered unit, but without the gas power head, it is much lighter to carry around overall. I'm very much looking forward to getting the other battery tools, as I feel this is the way of the future especially as battery technology matures.

    Another well thought out product
I've owned this tool for just a few weeks & so far I'm very impressed. I already have the battery powered saw, two ap180 batteries & the al100 charger. Being more than happy with the saw (although it has its limitations), I took the plunge & purchased the telescopic trimmer. The run time is a lot longer than the saw, easily an hour. Using this tool combined with a little tidying up in between, shifting stepladders etc. This tool + two batteries & the slow charger is easily on a par with my other ... read more cutters. It has a one year guarantee (two for the home user), & the quality you expect from stihl. Only downer is not being able to use it in heavy rain. Les noise, no petrol fumes & spillages & the customer pays to charge the battery. It just makes sense. Very pleased!

    Better Than Imagined
I bought this product for home use; 2 to 3 times per year as needed. However, I have a lot of shrubs/hedges, typically a 2 or 3 day job w/ clean-up each time. I also own the Stihl blower and string trimmer (3 years old) which have served me well. Using my 3 year old battery (AP 160) I started trimming and stayed at it for 45 minutes before I took a break thinking the battery probably needed a charge while I picked up trimmings. To my surprise, the battery still had 75% life and charged to full ... read more power in short order using AP 100 charger. Cutting power was as good or better than anything I've used in the past. Loved being able to pull the trigger, trim, release trigger, move ladder (in some cases# trim some more, adjust length, trim some more and never have to stop and restart a gas engine or refill a gas tank. Super convenient! Adjustable cutting bar angle and extension pole length met every need. Very quiet as you would expect. Allowed me to start work early morning before the heat of the day without disturbing neighbors. This is a "Heavy" duty tool which takes arm strength to wield, especially with the pole extended. Weight #to me# indicates quality build; no cheap plastic or flimsy parts. What I expect from Stihl. I expect to use this product for many years. The HLA-85 paid for itself the first time I used it #compared to hiring landscaper).

    OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!
I now own 2 of these units. They are exceptionally efficient, easy to use and comfortable to operate. I own many stihl products, and this is yet another amazing versatile tool. Starts easily and has an insane amount of power, cuts overgrown hedges easily and leaves a nice clean cut every time. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS!

    Excellent
The property I work on has close to 1500 lineal feet of box woods. They always need to be trimmed up before parties and such. These trimmers are light, powerful, and have no vibration. Swivel handle is a big plus for doing the sides. I can actually run these all day without feeling tired at the end of the day.

    Best equipment ever
I used other brands of trimmers for years and it was always a struggle. Much down time and repair and hang ups. I bought a Stihl trimmer and it was a dream. It cut the thick evergreen hedges like butter. Why didn't I get a Still earlier? It would have saved me time, frustration and money. I will always buy Stihl from now on.

Great Tool for Southern Properties with lots of shrubs
I bought this trimmer about six years ago, wishing that I had done so earlier. Where I lived at the time in GA, shrubs grow quickly so keeping up with the growth required long-reach trimming about each two weeks during the long growing season there. This machine always starts on the first or second pull of the starter rope if I follow the starting instructions. To keep it sharp, I always store it with the plastic guard in place and oil the cutter bar after each use with spray-on applications of ... read more WD-40, I am a homeowner in another state right now, it coming in mighty handy again for maintaining my landscape plants here as well. I expect it to last a long time, just like my Stihl chainsaw that is now 31 years old. I am finding that my small engines last a long time if I completely avoid using fuels that contain ethanol. Even big box stores now sell premixed gasoline for 2-stroke engines that contain no ethanol. Incidentally, this trimmer starts well, even on relatively cold mornings in WI where I now reside,

    This product has great features
This equipment is perfect for the hard to reach places. Very easy to use and the adjustable angles of the blade is very convenient.

    Excellent
I have this for heavy duty hedge trimming. The hedges are salt seeder trees cut down and trimmed as hedges. No other trimmer that I have tried can handle the job. Current trimmer is 8 years old and works thru the AZ summers of 120 deg plus. Love it.

    Trail Maintenance
We use our trimmer to cut brush in the Capitol Forest in Washington. Our trimmer is surprisingly fuel efficient and capable of cutting medium to high brush. We opted for the 24" bar so more people could handle the trimmer.

    A powerful single sided trimmer
I purchased a Stihl hedge trimmer after my consumer brand trimmer required repairs for the second time in a year. I went with the single sided trimmer assuming it has more power for the cutting blades. I have three acres with variious shrubs and trees that require frequent trimming. The first thing I noticed is the lack of vibration from the 86R. The smoothness while running is impressive. The damping system works admirably, and this noticeably cut down on fatigue. The 86R is a bit heavier than ... read more the lightweight unit I an used to, but by no means would I consider it "heavy". The lack of transmitted vibrations allowed me to work longer with fewer breaks, and I had no arm fatigue when I was finished. The longer working surface allowed me to finish faster. It runs quieter than my consumer trimmer as well. I am not a fan of the Stihl gas cap design, but its a minor annoyance probably related to the older units. I have no leakage with the "improved" design. Overall, I would have to say I like the 86R and would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful trimmer. It is a bit more expensive compared to the other brand consumer models that you find in the big box stores, but I have found that the initial investment pays off over the long run.
