Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood. October 22, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Auto oiler problems ( i believe) and very difficult to start Two days ago I returned to the store I had purchased my 250 and 251 models from, gave them back the 251 which no longer worked (see my review of that - they said I'd need to take up with Stihl any issues I had), and, after researching and talking with folks about the farmer models, bought the 311 with the 20 inch bar. After cutting two trees (about two feet in diameter), the chain essentially welded itself to the bar. I was able to pry it loose, but the chain now stood out from the tip of the bar by about 1/4 inch. I returned to the customer repair area of the store I bought it from and they said that that was a normal condition. Obviously it is not. I returned yesterday and received a full refund for my saw. Rated 5 out of 5 by Wokrs Geeat, less tiring than my older 310 Since I finally dropped a tree on my MS 310 (don't ask), I bought a new 311. With the grip isolated from the engine and chain, it is much less fatiguing. I have dropped tress up to 83 feet tall with my 311, cut them to length for my wood stove, and filled my pickup without straining my back.At 68 years old, that makes for a VERY GOOD DAY!When I needed a new saw, I was asked what brand I wanted - there is only one - STIHL ! Rated 1 out of 5 by Always a major struggle to start. Stihl weed eater works great. Still Leaf blower is fantastic. I have loved other stihl products. This chainsaw is no good. It takes a long long time to get it going each use.Following the the step by step instructions included in the manual this thing will not start.Bottom line, this will not be reliable for you. It is brand new. I've cut down 2 trees and spent 3 hours trying to start it total. Multiple times I've needed it, tried to start it and it won't start. Just paid a tree company to cut down a bunch of trees because this wouldn't start.I recommend staying away from MS 311.I have owned 4 other chainsaws, this is the worst for reliability. Avoid. Rated 5 out of 5 by Powerful, versatile, reliable Just finished using it almost daily for six weeks felling and working up bur oak and ash in Kansas. Bought it with a 20" bar which one can use all day long for blocking big limbs for the mill or firewood, and added a 25" bar for felling. Plenty of power to drive that length bar--working both sides and plunge cutting, we dropped a 36" diameter bur oak and certainly could have done larger. Bought two ripping chains from recommended dealer, and am looking forward to using it as a chainsaw mill to quarter big logs for our small bandsaw mill. Couldn't be more pleased. May 21, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by This product has alot of power for its size! I am very impressed by the power this small saw has, I cut logs the whole length of the bar and it does not loose power at all! Very impressed with the saw so far! May 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by 311 great power bought this to replace my farmboss that was stolen, dissappointed the farmboss was discontinued but the 311 is a great and powerfull saw, seems to run longer between fill ups and has power to spare May 6, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Multi-Purpose Saw I bought an MS-311 for home use, not needing the full power (or extra bulk, or price) of a 460-series as we use at work.Excepting a minor hiccup at first with the throttle linkage sticking at full throttle on start-up (which was easily & quickly remedied) the saw performs excellently.I custom-ordered mine with a 20" Rollomatic E-SUPER bar, and Rapid Super chain (_not_ recommended for inexperienced users), and have been helping friends clean up a new mountain property they've purchased. Even with the longer bar length, the saw purrs through downed oak like a hot knife through butter, and it seems like the run-time to go through a full tank is fairly longer than our 460s at work, likely due to the advanced engine tech. With proper basic care, cleaning, & maintenance, Stihl saws will almost literally last you a lifetime, through some of the the toughest use conditions you can find.If you need a dependable, powerful saw, that excels at extensive hardwood work, the 311 will suit you just fine...especially once you advance in ability to use the faster-working, better-cutting "yellow-rated" guide bar & chain combos.
