Rated 4 out of 5 by Not bad for a beginner or youth saw The only issue that I really had was the first start but other than that I would reccomend this saw to anyone who has never used one or been around this type of equipment its definitely not leatherface equipment but I would definitely reccomend this chainsaw for the woman of the house. Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect size I needed a smaller saw to save my back when doing firewood. I love my MS310 for the big stuff but it was just to heavy for trimming limbs all day before starting on the main branches. The MS171 is the perfect solution. The saw has plenty of power for a 16" bar cutting seasoned red oak. It is so light and is really balanced. Great saw for the price. October 11, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easily Meets & Exceeds Expectations As a homeowner who uses it to trim tree limbs, branches and split-rail fence repair, the MS 171 does everything I expected with ease. Folks who think it is too small for daily use felling mature trees must not have used Stihl's Product Selector or have realistic expectations for their budget. I did and got a great tool that does what I need.I had initially hoped for the larger chain common with the bigger saws but now after using the MS 171, the narrower PMM3 chain makes perfect sense. Stihl engineers knew that the narrow chain is a better compliment to the small engine's power, enabling it to cut steadily without bogging down. It took down a 8" diameter oak limb with over 38 rings without issue yet is light enough to use for hours trimming fence rails.Starts every time, even after months of no use, as long as you are familiar with the proper procedure common to most 2-cycle engine. If I had to find one Con, is that the oiler port on the narrow bar clogs a bit quickly. This is likely simply due to the narrow bar groove allows sawdust to pack more quickly that a larger groove for a heavier chain. Easily remedied by cleaning the saw periodically, which you should do anyways as a quality tool is an investment. October 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good for small jobs This is an excellant saw for the small wood lot, but will fall short if you are going after the 16-18 inch trees. It has good cutting for limbing and the 6-10 inch trees but I found it to be down on power for bigger trees or hardwood trees. I still like it and would not trade it in other then to go bigger horsepower model. Easy to start even when its hot. September 30, 2014

Rated 1 out of 5 by After 4 trips to shop, the new saw still bogs down & hesitates The saw had great features that were very handy, but the increased pollution controls made me wary. It starts just great, but on restarts it bogs down and dies when you touch the throttle. I have had the saw for 6 weeks, and have yet to run a tank of gas through it, as it has spent most of the time in the shop. The dealer has tried very hard, with many adjustments, and a new carb, but it is still very buggy and you have to carefully stroke the throttle to get it to rev up without dying. It was in shop for almost 3 weeks this last time, and they all have used it and said they are satisfied that it is as good as it will get, so I will try it again, but it almost died on them when they started it for me in the shop. This has sure turned out to be a sad experience, and I suspect I should have tried a different model. What little I used it, it consumed hardly any chain oil, but they said it needs to run at full speed to use the oiler, so hopefully that will not be another issue.
