Rated 5 out of 5 by Finnaly broken in! A little soon I said id post this winter but I couldn't wait any longer. Saw is great runs like a top so much torque for a 64 cc machine I cant believe it sometimes ive owned a lot of high end saws for firewood but by far this 391 its my favorite I can use the throttle however I want too and it just simply cuts as nice and easy power at all ranges im constantly finding myself testing the limits of this 391 and haven't found any, oddly enough I haven't run it out of gas yet during a job so if you like taking lots of breaks during the day I don't recommend it haha but if your looking to cut all day this saw and I always carry extra pre sharpend chains in the woods I will cut all day no problem I got my 12 cords for my house or more now im doing my dads he needs about 16 lot to go another really sweet thing is my hands have not gone numb running this saw unlike my other two 60cc brands in the same weight range everything my nerves get really screwed up and my hands tingle so bad sometimes cant feel the steering wheel in my truck especially when its below zero I wonder about those heated hand grips. well thanks again 391 September 26, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Another winner from Stihl I've been a Stihl owner for over 40 years. I've used other brands and not found them to be as reliable, fast or easy to use. My 030 AV is still working fine, just needed a bit larger saw and bought the MS 391. Very dependable and easy to use. Cuts like a dream. September 3, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very dissapointed I bought this saw last fall for a job that popped up while I was working out of state. I used it on that one job and it worked ok, it was just cutting a few old telephone poles. Since I've been home with the saw I have only been able to use it twice because I'm having issues starting it. Furthermore, once the saw is running it really doesn't have the power I feel a saw this weight would have. My 391 came with a 25" bar and I wonder if that makes this saw feel heavier than you'd excpect and I'm sure the longer bar does take some power away as opposed to the shorter bars. I have only ran premixed ethanol free gas in it, so I know the fuel is fine. It has been at the local dealer once already and is currently there getting worked on again. Hopefully she runs when I get it back. In short this saw is over weight, extremely unreliable, and just been frustrating. I have a decent sized band mill that I need to prep logs for and i cannot depend on this saw due to it not starting properly. This is probably the last Stihl product I buy. September 3, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Good for harry homeowner for smaller stuff Works great as an all around brush saw or for cutting smaller logs. Descent value for the power it comes with cause its pretty inexpensive. September 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by MS 391: A fast, dependable saw for big jobs. I had two dead oak trees in Illinois that had to be removed with diameters of 40 and 52". The best offer I could get was $900 for an arborist to remove just the smaller tree. Instead I purchased a 28" blade for my MS 391 and called a few buds to help cart the logs away. Each tree came down easily and I cut them into 25" lengths. It took about four hours per tree from start to finish. This is not a light saw, but if you let the saw work for you it pulls itself right through the tree and you can go for hours. That saw never kicked back or lagged once, and the chain stayed sharp through the entire job. One tree alone paid for that saw! My guys saw how easily it was cutting and begged me for chances to try it out themselves. Is there a finer saw anywhere? I've not found it. August 14, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by i love the power i have a ms 290 and was wanting a bigger more powerful chainsaw i cut a lot of firewood some 30 plus inch logs and the ms 290 is good but lacked the power i needed to get the big jobs done so i got the ms 391 and love it so far its got plenty of power my only complaint is that its heavy but if you can over come the weight its a great chainsaw to get. Rated 1 out of 5 by Disapointed in saw. Bought the MS 391 in March 2015. Used saw 4 times and every time about 1 hr. into cutting the saw stalls out and does not have power. I have to quickly pull throttle trigger multiple times to keep it from stalling or bogging down. I use 1 gallon of fresh premium gas and 2.6 fl. oz. of Stihl HP Ultra 2 cycle fully synthetic engine oil that I purchased with the saw. I took the saw back to the dealer (Hastings Ace Hardware) who I purchased it from and they removed the gas from the tank and placed it in a mason jar to observe it for several days. They showed a sample of gas to me and said the ethanol and gasoline was separating causing the saw to have the problems I am experiencing. I also did the mason jar test in my garage at home with the mix from my can and left over fuel in the saw's tank. Never have I seen any separation and the fuel looks uniform in color, nothing like what Ace Hardware employees showed me. The fuel is and looks fresh. Yet I still have problems with power and I am beginning to feel that I have a defective saw. I have a 2 year warranty on the saw, and I am just short of demanding a new saw or a return of my purchase amount in full. I also purchased a Stihl FS 56 RC string trimmer this spring. Unfortunately, I have not used the trimmer enough to know if I will have similar problems. I have owned another Stihl chainsaw for many years without any problems and this helped me decide to purchase other Stihl equipment. I cut an average 10 to 12 full chord of firewood annually and I really don't need mechanical issues with a new saw when I am in the woods. July 17, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lives up to the Stihl name This was my first Stihl that I purchased as brand new (got it while it was on sale). All of my other Stihls that I own I purchased as used (18, 28, 36, 44). It is just as reliable as all of the Stihls I have owned, with one exception: it doesn't run very well on old mix and it definitely needs Stihl mix to run at it's peak performance. My older Stihls were not finicky on old mix. For the price, this is a great saw for felling trees and crosscutting for firewood. July 11, 2015
