Rated 5 out of 5 by i love the power i have a ms 290 and was wanting a bigger more powerful chainsaw i cut a lot of firewood some 30 plus inch logs and the ms 290 is good but lacked the power i needed to get the big jobs done so i got the ms 391 and love it so far its got plenty of power my only complaint is that its heavy but if you can over come the weight its a great chainsaw to get. Rated 1 out of 5 by Disapointed in saw. Bought the MS 391 in March 2015. Used saw 4 times and every time about 1 hr. into cutting the saw stalls out and does not have power. I have to quickly pull throttle trigger multiple times to keep it from stalling or bogging down. I use 1 gallon of fresh premium gas and 2.6 fl. oz. of Stihl HP Ultra 2 cycle fully synthetic engine oil that I purchased with the saw. I took the saw back to the dealer (Hastings Ace Hardware) who I purchased it from and they removed the gas from the tank and placed it in a mason jar to observe it for several days. They showed a sample of gas to me and said the ethanol and gasoline was separating causing the saw to have the problems I am experiencing. I also did the mason jar test in my garage at home with the mix from my can and left over fuel in the saw's tank. Never have I seen any separation and the fuel looks uniform in color, nothing like what Ace Hardware employees showed me. The fuel is and looks fresh. Yet I still have problems with power and I am beginning to feel that I have a defective saw. I have a 2 year warranty on the saw, and I am just short of demanding a new saw or a return of my purchase amount in full. I also purchased a Stihl FS 56 RC string trimmer this spring. Unfortunately, I have not used the trimmer enough to know if I will have similar problems. I have owned another Stihl chainsaw for many years without any problems and this helped me decide to purchase other Stihl equipment. I cut an average 10 to 12 full chord of firewood annually and I really don't need mechanical issues with a new saw when I am in the woods. July 17, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lives up to the Stihl name This was my first Stihl that I purchased as brand new (got it while it was on sale). All of my other Stihls that I own I purchased as used (18, 28, 36, 44). It is just as reliable as all of the Stihls I have owned, with one exception: it doesn't run very well on old mix and it definitely needs Stihl mix to run at it's peak performance. My older Stihls were not finicky on old mix. For the price, this is a great saw for felling trees and crosscutting for firewood. July 11, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Nice saw but pretty gutless. The saw seems to be well built but really has no power, which is unreal for the c.c. it has. It was that way from day one too. Its not like its old and worn out. use the saw around the house on small jobs and it struggles. Ive used lots of other saw of much lower quality that had way more power. I would not recommend this saw if you have any sizeable wotk to do. July 4, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw This saw is great. The power is amazing. It starts every time by the third pull of he rope. I will recommend that if you are experienced with a saw and cut a lot of firewood get a different chain. The chain that comes with it is a low kickback version that shouldn't even be put on a serious saw such as this. Morgantown Outdoor Power is an awesome retailer, very helpful. June 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Really good saw for the price This is a solid saw. I have a 291 that is light but not much power. I also have a 461 with plenty of power but fairly heavy. I have the 391 set up with a 20 inch bar and it has plenty of power and not too heavy. So just right for my uses. As far as starting I have no problem with that and use it at altitudes ranging from 5 to 10 thousand feet. Fires right up. For those with problems here is what mine likes. First pull on full choke it pops. Push the lever up one spot while the throttle is still locked open and the chain brake is off. 2nd pull fires right up, pull the throttle and it pops into the run position. Warm fires right up. And the compression release is to be pushed in to start. It pops out on its own. Maybe that will help? So a great saw that I really like and use the most. And is really easy to start if you can follow directions June 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dependable and powerful I recently purchased the 391 after my 311 was stolen last fall. I only used the 311 for a few months and have used the 391 for a couple weeks. Here's what I think: the 391 feels more powerful and is overall better (in my opinion). I used the 391 to buck the remaining 24" diameter Douglas fir and blue pine for clearing out our homesite. It starts up reliably, easily cut through the logs straight and did not feel heavy at all. I use a 20" bar and was happy with the fuel economy (no noticeable difference from the 311). I also purchased the 2in1 sharpener which is crucial for keeping the chain perfect. If your deciding 311 vs. 391, go with the 391 and you'll be stoked! Also, I cut 7 cords of wood per season and I don't feel the need to spend the extra money on a professional series. The 391 is plenty for any homeowner! June 18, 2015
