Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw This saw is great. The power is amazing. It starts every time by the third pull of he rope. I will recommend that if you are experienced with a saw and cut a lot of firewood get a different chain. The chain that comes with it is a low kickback version that shouldn't even be put on a serious saw such as this. Morgantown Outdoor Power is an awesome retailer, very helpful. June 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 Really good saw for the price This is a solid saw. I have a 291 that is light but not much power. I also have a 461 with plenty of power but fairly heavy. I have the 391 set up with a 20 inch bar and it has plenty of power and not too heavy. So just right for my uses. As far as starting I have no problem with that and use it at altitudes ranging from 5 to 10 thousand feet. Fires right up. For those with problems here is what mine likes. First pull on full choke it pops. Push the lever up one spot while the throttle is still locked open and the chain brake is off. 2nd pull fires right up, pull the throttle and it pops into the run position. Warm fires right up. And the compression release is to be pushed in to start. It pops out on its own. Maybe that will help? So a great saw that I really like and use the most. And is really easy to start if you can follow directions June 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dependable and powerful I recently purchased the 391 after my 311 was stolen last fall. I only used the 311 for a few months and have used the 391 for a couple weeks. Here's what I think: the 391 feels more powerful and is overall better (in my opinion). I used the 391 to buck the remaining 24" diameter Douglas fir and blue pine for clearing out our homesite. It starts up reliably, easily cut through the logs straight and did not feel heavy at all. I use a 20" bar and was happy with the fuel economy (no noticeable difference from the 311). I also purchased the 2in1 sharpener which is crucial for keeping the chain perfect. If your deciding 311 vs. 391, go with the 391 and you'll be stoked! Also, I cut 7 cords of wood per season and I don't feel the need to spend the extra money on a professional series. The 391 is plenty for any homeowner! June 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good saw Works lightly-Worked well in umpqua I'm interested in stihl products they are very good pieces of machinery and last a lifetime.. June 17, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome power. This is my first stihl product. I have owned many other brands husqvarna, poulan, and homelite. I must say this saw out powers much larger saws mentioned.i am very impressed with the power from idle to full rip. It has plenty of low and midrange power and not just top end like some saws. My brother ran my saw and went and bought one just like it. May 21, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Burned up before the second tank of fuel was done I bought Stihl because I believe they build an excellent product. After having the first saw fail It seems it wasn't prepped properly by the original dealer. I was fortunate enough that STihl stood behind the product. When I got the new saw from the original dealer that seemed frustrated to have to deal with the warranty. I then took the new saw to another dealer and they showed me how the original unit like the new one wasn't to the spec that it should leave the factory at.The real problem is being a California customer we have poor alcohol based fuels and I think the tune from the factory just wasn't close enough for my environment. At last at a great dealer I love the new saw and would always buy Stihl again May 21, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by For at home use only I returned this saw due to it not being powerful enough for large pine here in Idaho and felt it was heavy for the power it had. I replaced it with the ms362 and I love the thing, recommend for homeowner use only not to be used on large wood. May 20, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by reliable, powerful, strong, awesome saw I have used this saw around my yard and it's a power house. The ms 391 is strong, powerful, and goes through wood with ease. Saves on fuel and time. It's nice to have a bigger saw when I am out cutting wood, because you don't know what you are going to run into, that a smaller saw cannot cut. Stay a way from the box store saws, they don't have the quality and reliability that Stihl has. May 8, 2015
