Rated 5 out of 5 by Don't buy a cheap chainsaw If you are cutting a lot of wood do yourself a favor and get a Stihl. I love my 391. It starts every time and cuts through wood like a hot knife through butter. It's the first chainsaw I've ever owned and I'm glad I purchased a Stihl. It's easy to use and maintain and won't disappoint you. July 23, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by This is my Hedge eater! The compression release button makes it very easy to start. Plenty of power to run a 20" chain in hedge, which is mostly what it sees. July 7, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great for home use. The first time I used this chain saw I followed the starting instructions exactly and it started fairly easily. It has been difficult to start since then though. I took it back to the dealership for a refresher course on starting and they had difficulty starting it as well but they were able to start it. They advised that the one weakness of Stihl saws is that they flood easily and that is what had happened to me. When I have used it it works like a dream, escellent control, minimal vibration, no kickbacks. I think I will really like this machine when I get better at starting it. July 2, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by POWER-RELIABILITY-QUALITY I have generally searched for above average quality in most anything I purchase.I have used STHIL chainsaws for 27 years. I recently retired from a large paidFire Department that purchased STIHL chainsaws for roof ventilation and wild land firefighting my entire career. There were cheaper saws available but our equipment committee never tested a more reliable chainsaw. I purchased a new STIHL 391with a 25" blade this year to use on my 5 acre homesite. I limbed and bucked thousands of board feet of fir and pine with plenty of power to take on the 25" plus timber. The saw is well balanced and average weight for a 64cc motor saw. This size saw is a little big for small trim work (Match the saw to the job). You will feel the size of this saw after extensive use at the end of the day.I'm 55 years old and don't regret buying this size however. I know I can tackle anything i'm going to face here in North Idaho. This saw started on the first or second pull every time. I only use non ethanol fuel. Keep the blade sharpand this saw will blast through your work. My excavator was surprised how fastI could get through the stump end of my largest timber. June 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent piece of equipment With this saw being my first Stihl....I have absolutely no complaints. I have used this saw for about eight months now and am running anywhere from a 20" bar up to a 28" bar. It seems the harder you work this saw the better it runs. Great saw at a great price! Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to use and powerful I found this saw to be easy to use and start. The standard chain is very durable when cutting southern live oak (Quercus Virginiana) I also purchased a carbide chain and 25" bar for later tree removal if needed after a hurricane. I am using Stihl bar & chain oil and Stihl 2-cycle oil with 100% pure gasoline (no alcohol) All of my future purchases of lawn equipment will be Stihl products. June 13, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love this saw 'Merica This saw runs like a champ. Always starts the same. Has so much more power than any other saw I've owned, seems like it could cut without the chain. I logged on to this site tonight to rave about the kickback protection. Earlier today I struck some heavy goat fence while being rather careless cutting small saplings. I've never seen anything like it. It was like a giant rat trap snapping at me, I would never of had a chance. I don't think my hand was I. The proper position to hit the emergency stop. Apparently these things are designed in a way that inertia can set off the brake? I'm not sure what happened, but I know that it works. Thanks STIHL June 12, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Major Pain to learn how to crank 1. This is my first STIHL chainsaw. So I was not sure if it was worth the extra cost or not. Well it took me a very long time to finally learn how to crank it. I believed that I was following the instructions provided and the two difference STIHL "How To" videos on-line. But I just could not get it crank no matter how hard I tried. My wife kept poking fun of me, for not listening to the other reviews, stating that it was hard to crank. But finally I was able to get it to crank after a month.2. Afterwards, I took it out to test it to see how it cuts, now that I was able to crank it. Well it cut thought my test tree like a hot knife though butter. It was like night and day compared to my non-STIHL chainsaw. Now I do not have any excuse for not felling a certain big tree, that my wife wants me to cut down ASAP.3. Now I am looking forward to putting my STIHL chainsaw to good use, on a bunch of projects needing to be done, that I have been avoiding doing. It is a wonderful feeling to have a company like STIHL to provide the required support before, during, and after the sale of their equipment/products. They go the next mile in explaining the proper use, and the fine art of using it, plus the how & why of the customer's maintenance of their products. I feel like that they got my back. June 7, 2014
