Rated 5 out of 5 by Wonderful Saw This saw wore me out!! I thought I had a lot of large trees to cut up after dropping them. I did actually but this saw didn't think so. It chewed through these logs like it was nothing and I just kept moving on to the next log and so forth. Then I turn around to see the job was done and nothing more right now to cut up. The 290 cuts so well that it doesn't really seem so much like work. The only issue isn't with the saw. If your my age you might want to take a break from cutting and not get to carried away as I did. I got a little to hot there at the last. June 12, 2013

Rated 4 out of 5 by Problems from the beginning. I purchased the MS290 last Friday. When I started it the first time it started hard and would not run smoothly. I let it idle for about 30 seconds and it started smoking around the clutch and sprocket area. I returned the saw to the dealer for service. When I picked it up 2 days later I was told Stihl would not cover it under the warranty due to customer abuse. They claim I had to be trying to operate it with the brake on! The dealer replaced the bearing and clutch springs and ate the cost but charged me labor. When I got home I noticed something laying in my driveway near where I first started the chainsaw. When I examined it I found that it was a rubber piece that would fit perfectly over the sprocket. It looks like some sort of a shipping protector of some kind. It probably needed to be removed when the bar and chain were installed by the dealer. It evidently caused the chain to jam causing the bearing to overheat etc... Needless to say I am not very happy! Rated 4 out of 5 by Good entry-level saw This was my very first saw, which I purchased shortly after we bought a 40 acre property. The dealer recommended it to me as it was Stihl's #1 seller, and I knew almost nothing about chainsaws at the time. It was a great saw to learn on. I cut mostly firewood, but wound up cutting quite a bit more than I thought I would, as we started using firewood almost entirely for our winter heat. After using the saw for year or two, I realized I needed more power. That's not a rip on the saw - just a suggestion that if you are burning wood every day all winter, get something with more power (391 or 362 or something). Like other Stihl products I have used, the quality is very good. The saw is lightweight and easy to use and clean. I cut mostly hardwoods, and run this saw with an 18" bar (5/16th chain). So long as the chain is sharp, it cuts through small to medium sized hardwoods pretty good. I have felled a couple walnuts up to about 24" in diameter with it as well, though that is pushing it's limits. When you start getting into the larger, dead wood that's where a little more power would be nice. I have since upgraded to a 391 that I use now for most of my cutting, and have my eye on a new 441 M-tronic, but I do use the 290 still to cut branches and smaller things I don't need the extra power for. Even with the bigger saws in my garage, it's nice to have a lighter weight saw for some tasks. After about two years of heavy use, the piston seized. I don't blame Stihl for that at all. For one, I was using this saw to do heavier loads and more cutting than it was intended to do. I also had been running ethanol gas, which I no longer do. Stihl says you can run 10%, but if your gas gets a little old, the ethanol can be a bigger problem. I would avoid it if at all possible. I now run ethanol-free, premium fuel only. I also spent some money on a digital tach which provides peace of mind when I tune it up. Knowing almost nothing about small engine repair, I was able to rebuild the 290 engine myself with a new Stihl piston, cylinder and oil seals. I was surprised how easy it was and the saw ran like new afterwards. I think that is a testament to how well designed Stihl saws are. I would recommend the saw to users who do moderate level, occasional cutting. For a homeowner with a few acres, someone who needs to cut firewood for an occasional fire, or a farmer who needs to keep up on some brush or clear some small areas, it sill probably fit the bill. If you're burning firewood every day to heat your house, get something with a little more power. June 4, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Definitely A Quality Work Horse We purchased this because we were in the middle of sawing up a huge tree. We always heard you can go wrong with a Stihl. We read many reviews and decided to go with the MS 290 Stihl Farm Boss. It finished up our tree & handled great. I definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a quality chainsaw. June 3, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent saw I purchased my stihl farm boss after owning a craftsman 46cc 18" saw and this saw is better in every way then the craftsman. Bought with 20" bar and use yellow rated chain and let me tell you this saw chews threw wood like a hungry beaver. Saw can get heavy after extended use especially when trimming felled trees with moving the saw into different positions. June 3, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Had a Farm Boss w/ 20” blade for 6 years and works as well as the first day. I use it in my weekend place in the mountains. Used primarily to cut firewood, the Farm Boss is powerful, easy to use and requires little maintenance. I’ve taken down small to big, mature trees and the power is just fine on both. The quality and workmanship is apparent when you use it. I have had the saw for about 7 years and it looks like I will have it in use for a good many more. Good reliable product for both weekender, hunting camp types that need a stack of wood to professional daily use. May 31, 2013
