Rated 5 out of 5 by Great entry level professional saw Great saw for cutting small to large trees. Not too big and heavy to handle the little stuff And makes enough power to cut fairly large trees too. It's a great "everything saw". Starts easy, maintenance is easy a very well put together product. Thanks Stihl! I am very pleased, highly recommended! April 20, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Good saw but low power This saw starts every time and runs well. But Cuts slow even with a short bar. I own three of these saws and haven't had any issue with them. April 19, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good Enough for a Rental Yard I worked at a rental yard for 6 months and learned the ins and outs of this machine during my time there. I can't speak a whole lot to the performance of this saw on the job (though nearly all our customers were satisfied), but I can say that this is just about the most durable saw in its class out there. Rental equipment in general takes a beating from the kind of stupid or careless customers, and chainsaws in particular are often rented by first time users. Our customers did all kinds of damage to these things. They'd forget to refill the bar oil, cut with a dull chain, run it with the choke half on, or knock dirt into the fuel tank when refueling. I still remember the day some guy returned one of these after spending an hour trying to cut something with the brake on. Even after that kind of abuse we still got around 2 or 3 years out of these machines on average, which is testament to the quality and durability of Stihl's products in general, and this saw in particular. The only complaint I had with this machine was the flimsy aluminum screws that hold the air filter to the machine. If you're in a hurry it's easy to strip the screws as you're reattaching the air filter. Other than that, these things are rock solid. April 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome saw I bought this saw 2 years ago to replace my old Craftsman. I cut between 10-20 cord of firewood a year. So far this saw has had about 20 gallons of fuel ran through it and been used hard. Mine has the 20 inch bar which at times seems a tad underpowered but it starts right up every time flawlessly. Even cutting through stumps and large trees with ease when the chain is good and sharp. I'm more than pleased with this saw and for the buck you can't beat it. It's a workhorse and know several others that love their MS290s. April 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw, great value! This has to be one of the best values in chainsaws out there! Good power, great price, does everything I need it to do. April 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by great saw for your money I just bought the 290 from a local dealer, I already love this saw and am happy with the power. I just started a business and I know this saw will be used for a very long time. This is my second Stihl saw and never have been let down once. April 3, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by From very disappointed to pleased. Do read. Rating was for this one saw. Not the model line. I purchased a MS 290 last fall to replace a similar saw of another brand. From the first had issues with cranking and power. Took it back to dealership about four times on this, to end up with a saw that totally failed. Not sure the workings of this but the saw was finally replaced making me a very pleased Stihl customer. Not how much was Stihl or the Dealer but pleased with their action. April 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by No Tree It Won't Cut!!! Bought this saw last fall to cut a few trees that had died during the drought a summer ago. Saw has been easy to start every time I use it. Saw has so much power that when I cut my wedges I almost cut through the tree first. Trees are no trouble to cut whether standing or already on the ground. This saw eats through hard wood like nothing and soft pines like butter. This saw is so great to use the only problem is I have all this wood to stack now. But I have a few more trees in its future.
