Virginia Beach, Va. (Sept. 10, 2010)SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2010 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Collegiate Series presented by Carhartt, STIHL’s collegiate lumberjack competition that identifies the nation’s top amateur lumberjacks, has been nominated for a 2010 SportsTravel Award in the best sports event series or circuit category. Winners are determined exclusively through fan voting. Final balloting is open through Monday, Sept. 13, 2010.

In 2005, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Series U.S. Championship received a SportsTravel Award in the best multi-sport or multi-discipline event category. The pro series was also nominated again in 2008. The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series received its first nomination for a SportsTravel Award in 2009.

The mission of the sports event industry's premier peer-based awards program is to select the top sporting attractions in terms of both spectator and participant experience. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS '10 Conference & Expo, Oct. 18-22, 2010, in Charlotte, NC.

“We’re honored to be nominated for a SportsTravel Award,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager, STIHL Inc. “We created the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series in 2003 based on the success of our Professional Series, and now our collegiate series boasts more than 60 participating schools and airs on ESPNU, setting the standard for collegiate competition.”

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series takes the ESPNU cameras in search of the best amateur lumberjack athlete by hosting five regional events on college campuses across the country. Resembling the energy and school spirit of a college football game, fans, students and locals cheer on their favorite lumberjack and school at each amateur competition. The Collegiate Series culminates with a national championship event held in conjunction with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional U.S. Championship. This year the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Professional Series celebrates 25 years as the original extreme sport on ESPN. The Collegiate Series provides the top collegiate lumberjacks with an opportunity to advance to the professional ranks of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series. Each year, the collegiate champion receives an automatic spot in the following year’s professional series and earns a place on an international rookie relay team, which competes at the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® World Championships.

“Events such as this one are a prime example of the achievement of excellence in the organization and management of sporting events,” said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo. “SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they know what it takes to execute a high-quality event,” said Schneider. “The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers for a job well done.”

Official ballots are available in the August and September issues of SportsTravel magazine. Readers may also find more information and vote online here. The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Awards in those three categories will be given for best single-sport event, best multi-sport or multi-discipline event, and best sports event series or circuit. Voters will also pick the best new sports event and an overall Sports Event of the Year from among the nominated events.
