Virginia Beach, VA - The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® 2005 Series Championship was honored with a 2006 Sports Travel Award at the Travel, Events, and Management in Sports (TEAMS) Conference & Expo, Oct. 11-14, 2006, in Las Vegas, Nev. This prestigious award honors superior organizations for event attendance, overall experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event.
STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS®won the TEAMS Waterford Crystal trophy as best multi-discipline professional event, beating out the Summer X Games and the Wrangler Rodeo Finals.
The Rose Bowl, the Super Bowl, the Winter Olympics, and Soccers World Cup joined STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® on the podium among the best events of the year.
“I want to thank each and everyone who had a hand in producing these events and let you know this is a shared trophy,” said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. “The popularity of our series is growing as evidenced by our ratings and the recognition we are receiving from people in the event industry.”
Phelps accepted the award in front of a packed house of sport organizers, convention and visitors bureaus, and sports commissions. “For the past 21 years we have been proud to produce top level competition for our STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® fans and they obviously appreciated it.” said Phelps. “The fact that the first ever World Championship in the series was singled out for this award shows that the series worldwide growth and popularity is being recognized.” Phelps specifically called out the support provided by the host venues over the years. “We simply could not have produced the quality of program that we did without the support of the CVBs and sports commissions.”
The series, which started in 1985 with a few professional events, has grown to include 16 countries, additional disciplines like boom running and tree climbing, and added a collegiate series that involves over 40 universities and colleges and airs on ESPNU.
