VIRGINIA BEACH, VATOOLS OF THE TRADE magazine, published by Hanley Wood, recently published the results of an editors test of nine professional electric chain saws. Surveyed uses of the product included: demolition, vintage wood salvage and reuse, panel home building, sculptural stair and railing making, woodcarving, and general framing. The STIHL MSE 180 C-BQ chain saw emerged as the leader with the STIHL MSE 220 following close behind.

“Picking my favorite was very easy; one saw just seemed to get everything right. For power, light weight, comfort, convenience, safety, and the only coast-down brake, the STIHL MSE 180 C-BQ was the overall winner,” editorial staff wrote.

The STIHL MSE 220 tied for runner-up. According to the publication “the larger, heavier STIHL, with its pro-level bar, chain, and dogs, cut without hesitationmore than twice as fast as some of the othersand was the one I grabbed when I really wanted to power through big wood.”
