LAS VEGAS— STIHL Inc., the manufacturer of the number one selling brand of gasoline-powered handheld outdoor power equipment in America* and gold level sponsor of the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Competition, congratulates this year’s winner, Ray Robinson, who took first place after laying 697 bricks in one hour in the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 competition. Robinson is a mason with J.A.M. Construction, Inc., in Gainesville, Fla.
 
The 2011 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National bricklaying championship decides the answer to the question, “Who is the World’s Best Bricklayer?” This timed, 60-minute competition was held on Jan. 19, 2011, at the Masonry Construction’s Challenge Arena at the 2011 World of Concrete / World of Masonry trade show.
 
The first place winner, 44-year-old Robinson was declared ”World’s Best Bricklayer,” with 697 bricks laid in one hour. Robinson is proud to attest that he has 27 years experience as a mason. He is proficient at installing brick, block and stone units—a skill set that is becoming less common. Robinson won the grand prize of a new 2011 Ford F-250, 4 x 4 XLT, V8 Super Duty, CrewCab truck that he drove home with his wife and father in-law. He also won $5,000, a TS 420 A-EWC STIHL Cutquik® cut-off machine, and thousands in additional sponsor prizes. His mason tender was Lynette Darby, also with J.A.M. Construction, Inc. Darby is the first female ever to compete in the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National.
 
The competition is comprised of the best bricklayers in the world. Twenty, two-man teams made up of a mason and mason tender, compete to lay the most brick while meeting strictly defined quality standards. The competition has the largest winner’s purse of any masonry competition. The competitors compete for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes before a crowd of as many as 3,000 spectators and webcast audience of 5,000 viewers.
 
This year’s competition was made up of winning bricklayers from 11 regional qualifying competitions held throughout the United States and Canada.

The SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 TOP CRAFTSMAN® award, recognized as the event’s next highest achievement, was earned by overall third place winner, mason Dave Moyle, of Moyle Masonry, Wadena, Iowa. Moyle laid 625 bricks, and his combined brick count and quality of his wall was judged the “most sellable” by the majority of the officials. As the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN, he won $5,000, an EZ Grout MH-12 “Little Piggy” mixer, a TS 420 A-EWC STIHL Cutquik® cut-off machine and thousands in sponsor prizes.

The second place overall winner was mason Jeff Burton, with Miter Masonry Construction, Cincinnati, Ohio with 671 bricks.
 
The SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER® winner was Raymond Burton, with Miter Masonry Construction, Cincinnati, Ohio. Burton won $2,500 in cash and sponsor prizes. In this event the tenders race the clock to set up a predefined work area for the mason. Burton’s winning time was 20:20:56 minutes.
