(KEY WEST, Fla.) —The STIHL Race Team finished the 2011 Superboat season on top with a win in all three races to capture the World Championship in Key West, their second overall and first in the SuperCat division.

A bittersweet ending to the season, the week was marred with accidents resulting in the deaths of three racers. However, the STIHL team was able to keep composure and won Wednesday’s race after it was called early following the first set of accidents. The team also took Friday’s race by over three seconds over the nearest competitor, the Motley Crew. Both teams raced a commemorative three laps on Sunday to honor the racers who passed away.

“It was a very difficult week overall,” said team owner and driver Bob Noble Jr., who is also president of STIHL Southeast, a distributor of STIHL products. “There was a great turnout and the weather was perfect. It was tough, though because the accidents really put things in perspective. We love to race and we know the risks involved; but, until it happens, you never really know how you are going to react. We thought the tribute laps on Sunday were our way of honoring their lives and their contributions to our sport.”

The team had an exciting start to the week on Wednesday, running side by side with the Motley Crew team until the Crew’s boat flipped about halfway through the race. Fortunately, no one was hurt and they were able to continue racing on Friday and Sunday.

“The conditions were almost too favorable,” said Noble. “A lot of boats were driving harder and faster than they normally would, and I think that contributed to the number of accidents we had this week. I am hopeful additional safety procedures will be reviewed for the coming season.”

The 2012 season begins in April in Jacksonville, Fla. The race boat and the team will be making a series of public appearances at various events and open houses throughout the Southeast.

“We are really looking forward to 2012,” said Noble. “Coming off a National and World Championship in our first full year in this division was a great start and now we want to build on that. We will be racing a full schedule again next year and with the addition of Jacksonville and other markets, we will certainly provide our fans and sponsors a lot of exciting racing.”
