VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – STIHL Inc. is proud to announce that Owen Davis from Norfolk, Va., is the newest undergraduate fellowship recipient through Virginia Wesleyan College’s STIHL Inc. Endowment for Undergraduate Research. The endowment is part of a larger contribution by STIHL Inc. to Virginia Wesleyan College’s Key to the Future Campaign.

Davis is conducting the “Zero Landfill Waste” research project, concerning trash and waste at STIHL Inc. He will use his research to create a plan implementing a zero landfill policy in plants 1 and 2 in the Virginia Beach headquarters.

”Zero landfill policies, ideas and ethics make sense because the project brings the old saying, ‘Waste not, want not’ into clear view,” says Davis. “We shouldn’t be wasting our resources: renewable, reusable, or not. We should be consciously reusing what we can and finding new products or new ways to use them more than once.”

Davis, a German major who is a recent cum laude graduate from Virginia Wesleyan has accepted a full-ride Graduate Assistantship at the University of Mississippi for a Masters of Arts of Modern Languages.

“I hope to gain experience in the corporate world, as well as the opportunity to work with a major German/American company located in my ’backyard‘,” says Davis about the STIHL research fellowship.

The STIHL Endowment for Undergraduate Research was established in November 2008. This 3-year endowment is designed to provide financial resources for Virginia Wesleyan students to engage in research projects at the STIHL Inc. campus.

The goal of Virginia Wesleyan College’s Key to the Future Campaign is to help fund the College’s vision of becoming a Phi Beta Kappa-caliber college. The Campaign is at 81% of its goal at $52.6 million on a goal of $65 million.
