FAQ – General Questions
My instruction manual says not to run the product at full throttle for the first 2 to 3 tanks of fuel mix. Why is this?
This can cause internal engine damage. STIHL recommends that you do not run your engine at wide open throttle without a load. A blower is under a load at all times, a trimmer is under a load as long as the trimmer head is in place and the line is to the correct length, while a chain saw is under a load when the bar and chain are in a cut.
I have a design idea – who can I submit it to?
Please Contact STIHL to request a STIHL submission packet.
If I can't get part lists online who can I contact?
Please contact your local STIHL dealer for spare parts assistance.
How do I become a certified STIHL technician?
STIHL only provides technical training to our dealers and their employees.
Does STIHL make lawn mowers?
STIHL does not produce a lawn mower.
Why doesn't STIHL provide SRP on their website?
Dealers are privately owned, and they have total control on how pricing is set. STIHL Inc. sells equipment and parts to only 12 companies in the U.S., those being our branches and distributors. They in turn sell to the dealers in the territories they service. Once the dealer purchases the equipment or parts, they own them, and can price them at whatever they feel is appropriate. The branches and distributors provide an -SRP list to the dealers, which can vary for each territory. However, as the dealers are privately owned, they can choose to follow the MSRP list or price the items at their discretion.
Why doesn't STIHL sell online?
Our business operates under different guidelines for quite a few reasons, not the least of which are liability and warranty issues. Dealers are required to unpack, prep, and test every unit they sell, and then take the customer through a short training session on the parts and controls of the unit both for their safety and protection as well as for familiarity of the power tool in question. This practice also supports our dealers, who are required to service as well as sell the product. Parts are also only ordered through dealers for the aforementioned reasons as well as part familiarity and any exchange issues that may arise. It's a lot easier to deal with a living person at a dealership who can expedite the resolution to an issue despite the inconvenience of actually having to travel to the dealer location, a procedure that the internet admittedly eliminates. Still, this "hands on" approach has continued to serve our company efficiently and well, even with the advent of the internet now several decades along.
Does STIHL sell factory seconds or refurbished trimmers, blowers or chain saws?
STIHL Inc. does not sell or refurbish products.
Why can I not download parts lists for my STIHL products?
STIHL Inc. does not release IPLs (Illustrated Parts Lists) to anyone except authorized dealers, technicians, and distributors of our products. This approach provides the end-user, in working through an authorized STIHL dealer, the best opportunity for product performance and maintenance. This also applies to STIHL service manuals. Please see your local authorized STIHL dealer for assistance in looking up parts. Parts lists have been constantly changing from the point at which your unit was first produced. By consulting your local STIHL dealer, he will help ensure that you receive the correct part the first time.
How can I register my STIHL product?
It is the dealer's responsibility to register the product with the customer before the customer leaves the store. The dealers have their own service website for this purpose as well as for technical and parts look-up issues. This is why we do not offer a website for this purpose for customers. There are several specific questions that must be agreed upon by both the dealer and the customer, such as proper instruction in the safe operation of the outdoor power equipment, and also to ensure that the proper instruction manual, tools and safety equipment have been offered to or received by the customer at the time of sale. Your sales receipt will always help us identify the date of purchase is the unit is not registered.
I have a complaint about my dealer. What can I do?
Please contact STIHL. Be sure to include a brief description, dealer name, city, and state.
What month does STIHL introduce new models?
STIHL does not release new products on a specific time of year. They are introduced when they become available.
When does STIHL put their products on sale?
STIHL Inc. does not offer specials or discounts. We sell to 12 different distributors throughout the country who in turn set up and supply dealers within their territory. These distributors offer promotions through out the year. You will need to check with your local authorized STIHL dealer for any specials or promotions. As a rule trimmer and blower promotions are done in the spring and early summer and chain saw and blower promotions are offered in the late summer and fall.
Does STIHL make a snow blower?
STIHL does not produce a snow blower.
How do you pronounce the name STIHL?
Our name is pronounced exactly like the metal "steel."
What is the correct oil mix for my older STIHL chain saw, trimmer, or blower?
STIHL recommends a 50:1 mix when using STIHL branded two cycle mix oil (2.6 oz. of STIHL branded oil for 1 gallon of gasoline) on all of our gasoline powered equipment.
Will a 10% (E10) blend of ethanol hurt my gas-powered STIHL product?
All STIHL gasoline powered engines can be used with up to a 10% (E10) blend of ethanol in the gasoline/engine oil mix. We also recommend that if a unit will be left unused for more than 30 days that it be stored "dry." This means emptying the fuel tank and then restarting and letting the unit run until all the fuel is consumed and the engine stops. For maximum performance and engine life expectancy we also recommend using STIHL Ultra 2-cycle engine oil with built in stabilizer.
Can you send me a calendar?
Please contact your local STIHL Dealer. Calendars are usually available in late November or early December, but supplies are limited. Note that not all STIHL Dealers carry the calendar.

How do I know that my chain oiler is working correctly?
A good test to determine proper oiling of the bar and chain assembly will be to lay a piece of paper or cardboard on the ground or a stump. Start the unit and place the tip of the bar approximately one foot above the paper. Apply full throttle and see if a thin line of oil appears on the paper. If this occurs, then the unit is oiling properly. If your chain saw is not operating properly, please see your local STIHL Dealer.
Why is the American flag at the bottom of the list and not at the top?
Many people type www.STIHL.com into their browser. This directs them to the worldwide site managed by our founding company in Germany, Andreas STIHL. It lists all of the countries with STIHL Web sites in alphabetical order, and that is the reason why the U.S. Web site is not listed first. Always enter www.stihlusa.com in your browser to go directly to the STIHL USA Web site.
