FREERIDE CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDE IN ASPEN
Jane “Jane Saw” Somerville of Team STIHL Takes
Second Place
ASPEN, Co.- More than 23 feet of snow has fallen this ski season,
providing a competitive setting for the STIHL Colorado Freeride
Championships. Taking place at Aspen/Snowmass, the series concluded
the weekend of March 2-3, 2007. Team STIHL’s own Jane “Jane
Saw” Somerville dueled it out with more than 100 of the most
talented skiers in the country over the steep drops, hanging cliffs
and snowfields of Snowmass mountain to wrap up a second place podium
position. In its third year of supporting the event, STIHL was
the 2007 title sponsor of the competition and brought the action
to ski fans with a feature broadcast on Plum TV.
“The level of talent, competition and excitement is extraordinary,” said
Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. “We
were especially pleased to see our own ‘Jane Saw’ do
so well. And of course special congratulations to Marek Cholinski
for winning the STIHL SLAM (Sickest Line on Aspen Mountain) award
for his 80-foot front flip.”
The championship is hosted by the Aspen Skiing Company (ASC),
which operates the four mountains in the Aspen area. STIHL and
ASC expanded their relationship this year as part of a joint commitment
to the environment. Walter Bennett, branch manager for Intermountain
STIHL, presented ASC with a STIHL MS 441 chain saw, and STIHL BR
500 backpack blower. Both units have reduced emissions, and the
BR 500, in addition to being listed as lowest in emissions for
its engine class on the EPA Web site, is also one of the quietest
blowers on the market with only 65 dB(A). Also donated were HP
Ultra oil, a fully synthetic, biodegradable oil that is ideal for
the new, low-emission engines, and BioPlus™ bar oil, made
with a vegetable oil base and rated by the Coordinated European
Council to be 93.8 percent biodegradable in only 21 days.
“We are pleased to have the chance to donate these low-emission
products to a company that is committed to operating sustainably
by reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions,” said Bennett. “STIHL
realizes that improving the environment is vital to ensuring a
long and prosperous future for all. It’s nice to recognize
and reward other companies for having the same values.” |
