Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) Tree and Turf Conference
Augusta, Ga.
Well,
2009 is off to a fast start. After finishing a two-day
workshop on climbing and rigging scenarios at
Rutgers University, I was packed and on the road twelve hours
later and heading South toward a hopefully sunny Augusta, Ga.
With
fellow arborist Brian Noyes, I traveled down to work
with STIHL Southeast at the Central Savannah River Area
(CSRA) Tree and Turf Conference. This has been an annual
trip for me for ten years now we teach a two-day
course on how to compete in an International Society of
Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Climbing Championship. We not
only explain rules and strategies, but we also demo the
events and then let the participants compete against one
another for plaques and prizes.
Though
attendance was lower this year, its truly a success any
time we get to help spread the word of tree worker
safety and reach out to newer climbers and workers to
help motivate them to get involved.
Big
thanks to my friends at STIHL Southeast for their
support, Henry Frischknecht, the key event organizer,
for his hard work at making this event a must-see, and
to Brian Noyes and Scott Prophett for making the
competition a professional and educational event for all
who participated and of course for making it more
enjoyable for me!
